Captain Robert "Mickey" Karr

KARR Captain Robert "Mickey" Karr, a long time resident of Belle Chasse, LA, went home to his heavenly father for eternal rest on August 9, 2010 at 2:45 p.m. after a three year well fought battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Mickey was born in Rosiclare, IL on April 28, 1934. He is survived by his wife, of 49 years, Ruth Hall Karr. He is the father of Dixie Karr Phelps of Jackson, MS, Roxann Karr Pool (Captain Paul), Captain William Karr, and John Karr (Penny) all of Belle Chasse, LA. Son of the late William and Lorene Karr of Carrsville, KY. Survived by his sister, Mary Karr Callahan (Bob) of Felton, DE. Brother-in-law of Rev. Leland and Glenda Hall of Grand Prairie, TX and Mary Ellen Hall and Gary Knowles of Paducah, KY. Grandfather of six grandchildren: Candice McFarland, Traylor Phelps, Jacob Kirkland, Brady and Colin Falcon, and Aidan Pool, and a host of nieces and nephews. In 1951 at the age of 17, started his service on the Mississippi River and 10 years later became a river boat pilot. He eventually started his own business Karr Brothers Marine. He built, by hand, his first tow boat named "Ruth Ann". In 1974, Mickey joined the New Orleans - Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association as NOBRA 50, until his retirement in 2006. He also acquired his aviation license in 1980. In the mid 1980's, he worked aboard the "Delta Queen" and "Mississippi Queen" as a river pilot. He worked after his retirement for Delta Marine Towing. His love and dedication for the Mississippi River spanned 55 years. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Service in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, LLC., 7040 LAPALCO BLVD., MARRERO, LA, on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 8 PM. Visitation will be from 6 PM until service time. Interment will be private.
