It was always great seeing Russell at the Capitol, giving him a hug and saying hello. He was such a cheerful person and will
be missed in future legislative sessions. I also enjoyed seeing him on his bike in New
Orleans, usually random times, biking to Starbuck's at Canal Place. A wonderful
soul he was and Im glad I knew him on this earth and hope that he rests peacefully in heaven.

To Russ' family I send my condolences. I worked with Russ at Family Service Society many years ago- when his children were small. He was a fine social worker who epitomized what I think a social worker should be. His voice will be missed but his impact lives on.

Russell Henderson was an interesting conversationalist, an avid reader, a master teacher, an outstanding community organizer and a comsummate change agent. Whether producing a video, teaching a university class, serving on a board, analyzing a policy or conversing with the family, his moral compass pointed toward justice and equity.

His continuous pleas for children and youth may be best articulated through his friend's prayer:
"O God of the child prodigy and the child prostitute, of the child of rapture and the child of rape.
Of runaway or thrown away children who struggle every day without parent or place or friend or future,
Help us to love and respect and protect them all." (Marian Wright Edelman, "O God of All Children")

May that spirit of love and advocacy comfort you at this time.

"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren that you do unto me" (Hymn) The constant passion Russ had over the years for those often seen by society as "least" but in the eyes of God as "mine" will carry him safely into the arms of his Creator. Though our paths crossed infrequently from St. Ben days till now I knew he was a special person. To his brothers whom I saw recently at Christina's and to all of his family my condolences. I will remember Russ as I celebrate Mass Sunday at the Catholic Deaf Center in Baton Rouge.

To Russell's family,
I was sorry to hear of your loss. I remember Russell fondly as a co-worker at Milne Boys Home where we worked together as social workers. He was very dedicated to helping the boys at the Home.

Russell was a dedicated colleague working hard for children's issues and disadvantaged people. I also remember the hard work on other congressional campaigns (central Louisiana) to elect Faye Williams for congress - back in the 80's, when I first met him! Russ, may god bless your family and love ones and heaven smile upon you my friend!

Some men do good things to gain wealth and power; some do good things to gain glory and public adulation; some even do good works simply to get a tax deduction; and then there are those who fight the good fight because it is the right thing to do. I am honored that Russell crossed my path many times in this life. All of our lives are enriched by his work and his zeal. He will be sorely missed. In pacem requiescat.
