Sally Brothers Obituary

Sally Smith Brothers, age 87, late of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2018, in Naples, Florida, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Brothers was born December 15, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Howard G. ("Babe") and Ruth Davis Smith. She attended New Trier High School, in Winnetka, Illinois, and Lasell College in Boston MA. She met her husband in New Orleans and built a life and family in the New Orleans region for the next 65 years, mostly in Slidell. She didn't miss any youth activity as far as her children recall, and was a fixture in stadiums and ballparks and gymnasiums around south Louisiana for many years. She was a tireless cheerleader and taxi driver for all 4 of her kids and their friends ... and hosted wonderful oyster and seafood parties in the carport of the family home. She was active in the Red Hat Society, Slidell Yacht Club, Line Dancing, Yoga, and Bridge, making fast friends wherever she was. She was quick to smile, smart as a whip, had a great sense of humor and possessed a wonderful independent streak that served her well throughout her entire life. Survivors include her children, Hank Brothers (Cathy Landry), of Washington DC; Chalmers (Betsy) Brothers, of Naples FL; Holly Brothers Thurber, of Dallas TX; Howard Brothers (Wendi Gregg), of Atlanta GA; her brother Howard ("Howie") (Dottie) Smith, of San Antonio TX; and her grandchildren Rachael, Ben, Caroline, Jonathan and Alexandr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Brothers, who passed away in 2007. A celebration of Sally's life will be held from 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Assunta's Italian Restaurant, 2631 Hwy 190 W, in Slidell, Louisiana. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Slidell Library, 555 Robert Blvd., Slidell LA 70458, https://www.sttammanylibrary.org/friends-of-the-slidell-library/, in memory of Sally Brothers, who volunteered there and read many of their books!
