Selma Zander Obituary

ZANDER Selma Schonbrun Zander died on 3/8/09 at Poydras Home after battling Alzheimer's Disease for many years. Born on March 16, 1924 in New York City, she came to New Orleans in 1941 to attend Newcomb College where she attained her degree in education in 1945. In December, 1945 she married Max P. Zander of New Orleans, her loving husband of 63 years. She enjoyed playing bridge, mah jong, and golf with friends. She also adored music of all kinds and was an accomplished classical pianist. She was an active member of Touro Synagogue, Touro Synagogue Sisterhood, the Jewish Community Center, and the National Council of Jewish Women. She served for many years as house mother and advisor to AEPhi sorority at Newcomb College. But her greatest pleasure came from caring for her husband and two sons, Richard E. Zander and Scott R. (Skip) Zander. She is survived by husband, Max, sons Richard (Berry) of Greenville, S.C., and Skip (Marsha) of New Orleans, grandchildren, Karen Spiegler (Jason) of Charlotte, N.C., Nicki Zander of Washington, D.C., Rachel Zander of Charlotte, N.C., Erin Zander of New York City, and Jamie Zander of San Diego, CA and great grandson, Benjamin Spiegler of Charlotte, N.C.
