Shirley Storey Obituary

Shirley Rucker Storey, a Watercolor Artist, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Canon Hospice, of lymphoma. She was 73. Mrs. Storey was born in New Orleans and lived in Harahan for the past 40 years. She had a long career as an artist, first as a graphic artist, then as a fashion artist and subsequently as a watercolorist and teacher of watercolors. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School, then studied commercial art at L. E. Rabouin School. She also studied fine arts at Newcomb Art School and New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She worked as a fashion artist at Maison Blanche, Godchaux's, Kreeger's and D.H. Holmes. She later became a watercolorist and exhibited her work at shows of the art associations of which she was a member, including the New Orleans Art Association, Metairie Art Guild and Jefferson Art Guild. Mrs. Storey taught commercial art at Audubon College and worked as a volunteer teacher of watercolor art at the Harahan Senior Center for eight years, directing the group's annual summer art shows. She also taught private art students. Survivors include her husband, Paul L. Storey, of Harahan, and a daughter, Shauna Storey Grissett, of New Orleans; her son-in-law, F. David Grissett; a sister-in-law, Ann F. Rucker; two brothers-in-law, Ward and Demps Bannerman; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; two step-grandchildren, and her dog, Duffy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Capt. John A. Rucker, Sr. and Katherine L. Bacas, and a brother, John A. Rucker, Jr. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., (in Metairie Cemetery), on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 12:00 P.M. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 18, 2004 from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. and again on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services. Interment will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Shirley and I were good friends in the 60s and early 70s. She was a great help in my art career, and we shared many things in connon. We were neighbors for over 15 years. Am sadened by her demise.
