Sister Agnes Hornsby SSND Obituary

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on June 6, Sister Agnes Maureen Hornsby, SSND, age 84, who had been on hospice for some months, passed quietly into the arms of her God. She died as she lived, quiet and unassuming in nature but bold and trusting in spirit. Born on the feast of St. Ann, July 26, 1940, to Ednolia Maire (DuBois) and Hilton Hornsby in Houma, Louisiana, she was the first of three children. She is survived by her brother, Hilton of Metairie, LA and her sister, Agnes Ann Sprague, Baton Rouge, LA., as well as their children and families. Baptized Eloise Maire, she attended several elementary schools in the area and Terrebonne High as a freshman. After three School Sisters of Notre Dame came to open a school in her home parish, she was drawn by a vocational call to become one of them. She transferred to St. Mary of the Pines, Chatawa, Mississippi to complete her high school education. On August 24, 1958, she was received as an SSND candidate in her home parish, Our Lady of the Rosary, Houma. She then traveled to Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis, MO. She was received into the novitiate on July 28, 1959, and given the name Agnes Maureen. She professed first vows on July 29, 1960, and professed final vows on July 25, 1966, in Dallas, Texas. Following profession, she ministered in several places in Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, as well as Rome, Italy. She described her ministries over these years as seamstress, driver, sacristan, mover and packer, cook and baker, laundress, cleaner, and health care worker. In 1990, she continued her ministry of community service at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa. This ministry was interrupted in 2001 when she returned to her parental home in Houma to care for her mother. Following her mother's death, she returned to St. Mary of the Pines until she moved in 2019 with the other sisters to St. Anthony's Gardens, Covington, LA. As her health declined, she was transferred to Trinity Trace Community Care Center in 2022, where she passed away. After 64 years of generous and loving service as a School Sister of Notre Dame, Agnes Maureen was welcomed into her eternal home. Services for Sister Agnes Maureen will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Covington, LA on June 18, starting with a Sharing of Memories Service at 10:30 followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 officiated by Father Rodney Bourg. Burial will follow at St. Mary of the Pines Cemetery, Chatawa, MS. To view services, go to the livestreamed Mass icon on the parish website: www.mhtcc.net. Arrangements are entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home of Covington, LA.

Will always remember her beautiful smile and happiness she brought into the room. She enjoyed painting and arts and crafts at St. Anthony's and as the Life Enrichment Director, I enjoyed seeing her happy doing her art. She will be missed! I know she is with her loving God!
