Stephen St. Germain Obituary

Stephen Landry St. Germain passed away at his home on Friday, July 21, 2017. He was born October 19, 1943, and remained in his beloved City of New Orleans for his entire life. He graduated from Alcee Fortier High School in 1961, where he was a member of Phi Kappa fraternity. Post high school he attended LSU in New Orleans, and the John McCrady School of Art. His career as a designer and illustrator began when he went to work for Harry Mayronne Studios, located in the Exchange Alley of the French Quarter. Stories of his most cherished memories and valued friends were typically recounted from ""those days at Harry's."" He was an active member of the Art Directors and Designers Association, where he was recipient of numerous awards. Following the closure of Mayronne Studios, Steve began his own business as proprietor of St. Germain Graphics. His most widely known achievement in New Orleans is his silk-screened poster, representing the 1982 Jazz and Heritage Foundation's Jazz and Heritage Festival. From that time, he produced posters for many other well-known events, such as the Kentucky Derby and the New York Jazz Festival. His drawings and illustrations were also commonly seen on the pages of New Orleans Magazine. Stephen's passion for music equaled his passion for art. He spent years collecting and creating compilations of New Orleans music into hundreds of CDs, whose covers he quizzically drew and designed. Most notable about the character of Stephen St. Germain was his sense of humor, love of life, grace, and unwavering modesty. When asked for a biography, he replied, ""I am left-handed."" He is survived by his wife, Kathleen St. Germain, his three children, Terry, Lorin, and Clayton, and his three beautiful and clever grand daughters, Bridget, Naomi and Pia. Stephen will be interred at Lake Lawn Cemetery, Metairie, Saturday, July 29th, in a private family ceremony. A memorial gathering of friends and family will take place at the Napoleon House, Sunday, August 13th, 2 pm to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to the Youth Empowerment DesignWorks Project, https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/yep2017, an organization that educates and trains young people in creative fields, such as graphic design, photography and other visual arts, and assists with securing employment in these fields. I knew Steve from 1966 through 70. One day at the Seven Seas he said you play pretty good guitar why dont you teach? and I said well I dont have a phone so he made me a beautiful handwritten advertisement saying : contact me at 1227 Royal Street. Well someone tried to steal it from the Seas but I liked it so much I kept it. Subsequently a friend gave it to me years later after I thought I had lost it. Anybody knowing the where abouts of Mack Mire, contact me at [email protected]... at bottom there she is...

Despite his always instilling me with the artful application of language, the only thing I can think of at this early (he would have liked this hour) hour is what he constantly hepped me to throughout my life, apropos of nothing: "Wherever you go, there you are." Well, there he is. XO

My thoughts are with you Kathleen and Steve's family. Thank you for arranging the visit with Steve last October. He was in such good spirits and I will always cherish that memory. I will also treasure the memories of him when we were all young and crazy in the 60's and going out on the town. He was so smart, so talented, so avant garde, so handsome, and ever so much fun. He was a good man and I know he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen when we were classmates in the 7th Grade. I remember him as being always nice, a good friend and very, very talented. He was a gifted illustrator and was always drawing something that would make us laugh. It was great to see him many years later at our high school 50th reunion and talk about old times. Through Stephen I also met his late cousin, Gary. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the family. I knew Steve at a very young age and he was always righteous and kind. We had some very wild fun and great times in our youth. The last time I saw Steve was a couple of years ago at a music festival in the CBD partying and enjoying himself to the max. He was happy and peaceful. I am deeply saddened by his departure. I have and will always consider him a friend who is close my heart. He has left us all too soon. RIP Steve.

Steve and I were friends and friendly rivals as illustrators back in the 70s when I lived full-time in NOLa. I was often stunned by his skills and his imagination. Our rivalry if evenonly one-sided made me a better artist. I am stunned and saddened by his passing and reminded how precious life is.
