Dr. Walter Joseph Barial obituary, 1926-2017, New Orleans, LA

Walter Barial Obituary

Dr. Walter Joseph Barial, a true servant of God, marched obediently home as a faithful soldier under the command of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who ordered him home on April 5, 2017 at the age of 90. He was born May 21, 1926 in Pascagoula, MS, the eldest son and third child of Mr. Walter A. Barial and the former Miss Olivia Collins. Dr. Barial received his elementary education at St. Peter the Apostle School in Pascagoula and went on to attend St. Emma Military Academy in Rock Castle, VA. After completing his junior year, he was drafted and served in the US Army during World War II.He saw tours of duty in both the European and Pacific theaters of operations and was awarded the Bronze Star. Following his honorable discharge, returned to Mississippi to complete his high school education at Our Mother of Sorrows High School in Biloxi, MS. Dr. Barial went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana, graduating in 1951. He was briefly employed as a chemist at the Kaiser-Frazer automobile plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan prior to enrolling at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1956, Dr. Barial graduated from Meharry Medical College. He completed his internship and surgical residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Following his residency, he worked at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis. While in St. Louis, he met the former Miss Sylvia Fraction, whom he married in 1962. To this union were born three children: Walter Barial, Lauren Barial, MD, and the Honorable Monique Barial-Carey, Judge. In 1962, Dr. Barial and his wife moved from St. Louis to New Orleans. It was in the New Orleans community that Dr. Barial became among the first board-certified physicians in Louisiana and joined Medical Associates, the first African-American owned multi-specialty medical practice in the state. The practice had multiple locations and served primarily African-American residents throughout the metropolitan area. Among other positions he held, Dr. Barial served as Chief of Staff of Pendleton Methodist Memorial Hospital, United Medical Center and St. Claude General Hospital. He also held staff privileges at Flint Goodridge Hospital and Sara Mayo. He served as a physician at W-15 clinic at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, from which he retired in 2005. He most recently served as the University Physician at the student health center at Southern University at New Orleans where he practiced until the summer of 2016. He was a longtime member of the National Medical Association, the Louisiana State Medical Society and New Orleans Medical Association. He was also a member of the national fraternal organization Alpha Alpha Boule and The Bunch Club, for which he served as president and Mardi Gras Ball chair. He was also a passionate New Orleans Saints fan and was a season ticket holder for many years. Dr. Barial was a devout Catholic, attending Catholic schools exclusively from the elementary level through his graduation from Xavier University. He was a member of the Newman Club at Meharry Medical College and practiced his faith diligently throughout his life. He attended mass regularly, and in his later years, daily. Upon settling in New Orleans he became a parishioner at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Pontchartrain Park and later, St. Maria Goretti Church in eastern New Orleans. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 54 years, Sylvia, son Walter, daughters Lauren and Monique, son-in-law Michael Carey (Monique), granddaughter Morgan Riley Barial Carey, sisters Victorine Bonam and Marie Bonam and brother Francis X. WORLD'S GREATEST DOCTOR...
There aren't enough words in the English language or any other language that could define the c;character of Dr. W. Barial. His manner and humor was beyond exceptional. He truly had a passion for what he did. He was dedicated to perfection to his patients a n d whenever I would go to see him as an adult he would always ask" how ya momma nem?" He was my entire family's physician. I know you all must miss him dearly. I'll never forget the portrait of his wife and kids he so proudly displayed. Thanks be to God for such a one as him. May God continue to bless and shine on you all. In loving memory of the world's finest doctor. Blessings to you all.

To the entire Barial Family:
It was such a shock to read this obituary. I was a long time patient of Dr. Barial from about age 4 to my adulthood when he retired. My mother-in-law, the late Lillyann Wylie, was one of his first patients at Medical Associates on Louisa St. He performed surgery on my brother, uncle and 2 of my children. There will never be a doctor as caring, concerned, compassionate or devoted as Dr. Barial. As a teenager, my mom would give me the money for an office visit follow-up and many times I returned home with the money. He would put in that beautiful handwriting NC or no charge. He was a beautiful spirit. He was the family doctor for my entire family for 3 generations. I'm deeply saddened as I'm sure you all are. May God heal and bless you all.

He was the best doctor...I was his last tonsillectomy...my surgery was in 1974...I was 14 yrs old at the time...often my visits to his clinic on Louisa street were so pleasant...I spoke to him serval years ago at goretti church and mentioned that I was his last tonsillectomy...he just laughed...he said oh yeah...I did have a last one...such a wonderful man...many times he wouldn't charge my parents for my clinic visits...that's the type of person he was...we would talk about my future educational plans...he was very encouraging

My condolences to the Barial family. He was respected and loved by many native New Orleanians. Dr. Barial wss my childhood doctor. I remember when he made a house call when I was 5 yrs old on Perlita Steet in the Parchester Apts. Dr. Barial and his black bag. He'd sometimes call me Shirley by mistake and would teasingly say he calls his patient named Shirley by my name. His kind, gentle, and witty personality always made going to the doctor less scary. Dr. Barial leaves behind a "good name" to all those he medically cared and humored along the way and will be truly missed. May you find comfort in God's promises that soon "no resident will say: "I am sick" and death will be no more. (Isa 33:24, 1 Cor 15:25, 28)
Your family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Nurse Barial, children and grandchild: I have known Dr. Barial since I was a small child. He attended Our Mother of Sorrows in Biloxi with my dad and his siblings. My family and myself chose Dr. Barial as our physician when he was on Louisa St. He was an awesome doctor. In later years I would see him in Church at Goretti, at social events and he never changed, always smiling and happy. He meant so much to so many people. I thank you'll for sharing this wonderful and Godly man with us all. I pray God gives each of you strength and healing.

I will always remember Dr. Barial and his wonderful sense of humor. I had the honor to work with him as a very new RN in the ER at St. Claude Gen. and as a nursing student at Sara Mayo Hosp. So sad about his death, but he gave so much and will NEVER be forgotten!

With sincere condolences to the Barial family. I remember Dr Barial from my childhood. He was everybody's doctor. He took care of my grandparents, my parents, and all of my relatives and when I became older, he became my doctor. Such a pioneer in the medical profession.Dr Barial took the Hippocratic very seriously. When I read the obituary on yesterday, I began calling my relatives who have since moved away from New Orleans following hurricane Katrina, and the only thing that they could not remember about Dr Barial was his age. So, take your well earned rest Dr Barial, we all loved you.

To the Barial family:
I had the privilege of working with Dr. Barial at Charity Hospital, in W15 and W16. That privilege was again awarded to me after Katrina, when I came to work at Southern University at New Orleans Student Health Services. He always came to work with a smile no matter how he was feeling. He was kind to all Students, Staff and Faculty. He was all professional and had a kind word for everyone. At the end of his day he would always say "I'll see you tomorrow if the Lord says the same and the creek don't rise" It was a joy and a pleasure to work with such an awesome person. Please know he will always be remembered.Know that earth has no pain that heaven cannot heal.
