Wilbur R. McKenzie

Wilbur R. McKenzie, 90, of Lake Helen, passed away on May 15, 2015 at his home. He has been reunited with his beloved wife of 66 years, Annie Laurie, having lost her this past December. Mr. McKenzie retired after 30 years as a mechanic for Bill Holler's Motor Sales in DeLand. After retiring, he started his own business "The Roaming Mechanic". With his love for racing, he worked for Daytona Speedway and Talladega Speedway as a security guard for over 31 years. Mr. McKenzie served his country in the U.S. Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theater, with the 3rd Marine Division. He went on to serve his home town as a commissioner for 8 years. He was a member of Blake Memorial Baptist Church, and eventually a deacon there. Throughout his life he donated a total of 23 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, and always maintained a large vegetable garden, sharing his bountiful harvest with everybody. Wilbur always stood ready to lend a hand, or just sit and visit whenever he could. When his health failed, he began telephoning to let you know that he cared about you. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed the outdoors immensely. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawson Cleveland McKenzie and Amy Belle Glenn McKenzie, brothers, Baby boy McKenzie, Lawson Cleveland McKenzie, Jr (L.C.), George Colby McKenzie, Leon Wayne McKenzie, sisters, Edna McKenzie Davis, Claudia McKenzie, Betty McKenzie Belz and Dorothy McKenzie Johns. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughters, Susan Ann (Duane Allen) Taylor and Linda Sue (Bill) Irvine, son, Richard (Jane) Taylor, granddaughters, Sunny Angel (Glen) Yost, Melinda (Mark) Wallace, great grandchildren, Aaron Lucas Yost, Samantha Elizabeth Yost, Sarah Jean Yost and Julia Wallace and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will celebrate his life with a service at Blake Memorial Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 19th at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Blake Memorial Baptist Church in Lake Helen or to Halifax Health Hospice.
