David J. Coenen

David J. Coenen, age 91, of Council Bluffs, passed away June 5, 2025, at his home. Dave was born July 29,1933, in Westphalia, IA to the late Wilfred and Margaret (Schwery) Coenen. He graduated from St. Boniface High School, Westphalia in 1951. Dave proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He married Barbara Jane Robertson on June 6, 1959. They were blessed with five children: Gary, Sharon, Ron, Kimberly, and Carla. Dave worked for Meadow Gold Dairy for 29 years and Mall of the Bluffs for 28 years retiring in 2014. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Dave loved gardening, walking, and dancing. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Barbara in 1987, sister, Gloria Schmitz, and brothers, Ivo and Marvin. David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Karen Coenen of Council Bluffs; children: Gary (Barb) Coenen of Creston, IA, Sharon (Ed) Weidig of Roman Forest, TX, Ron (Jing Jing) Coenen of Sharon, MA, Kimberly Vice of Louisville, NE, Carla (Kevin) Olson of Murdock, NE; 20 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; stepson, Russell Sorbello in IL; sisters, Victoria (Larry) Schmitz of Westphalia, IA, Twyla Grooms of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Carol Coenen of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law, Norman Schmitz of Westphalia, IA; nieces and nephews.

Wake service, Friday, 6 p.m., followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, 10 a.m., at Corpus Christi-Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church, 3304 4th Ave. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites tendered by the Kanesville Riders Honor Guard. A lunch will follow at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 E. Pierce St. The family will direct memorial contributions.
