Dolores Marie (Berens) Fischer passed away July 14, 2021 at Bethany Heights in Council Bluffs, Iowa following a long and very healthy life. She died on what would have been her husband Con's 100th birthday. Dolores was born on a farm northwest of Dunlap, Iowa on April 25, 1920 to Joseph Berens and Mary (Bentlage) Berens. She was home schooled by her Mother until March, 1927 when the family moved to a farm one half mile west of Neola. At that time she enrolled in St. Joseph School and continued her education there until graduation from high school in 1938. After high school she did house work and child care in the Neola area for three dollars per week. Later she moved to Omaha, enrolling in Van Sant School of Business. After one year, she worked in the steno department of Butter Nut Coffee at Paxton Gallagher. She continued working there until her marriage to high school classmate and sweetheart Cornelius Fischer of Neola on August 9, 1947. She then became a stay at home Mom on their farm north of Bentley. Children Mary Jo, Dorothy and John were born in those early family years. She and other local women started the hot lunch program at Bentley School. She was a 4-H leader, teaching both young and old to sew with her talent as a seamstress. She often modeled her home-made clothes for Pottawattamie County Extension. In later life she became active at St. Patrick Church of Neola's Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) for people who wanted to join the Catholic faith. She was involved with RCIA for 22 years, during which 93 people joined the Catholic Faith and St. Patrick Church of Neola. She cared for father-in-law Tony Fischer, who lived with Con and Dolores for his last 16 years, and also for her Mother Mary who lived with them briefly in her later years. Among the highlights of her life were travels to daughter Mary Jo and Captain Frank Dobrydney's assignments on coastal and Hawaiian Naval Bases, and entertaining family and friends at home. After 66 years on their farm, Con and Dolores purchased a house in Underwood, where they enjoyed 6 years of city living prior to moving to Bethany Heights Assisted Living in August, 2019. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 73 years, Cornelius (Con) Fischer (12/27/ 2020), brothers George, Robert, and Jim Berens. Dolores is survived by her sister, Joann Kenealy of Council Bluffs, her children Mary Jo (Frank) Dobrydney of Springfield, VA, Dorothy (Michael) Mauro of Des Moines, and John (Mary) Fischer of Neola, 9 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters in law Marilyn Carr of Platteville, WS and Pauline Fischer of Des Moines. Visitation with the family, Thursday, 5 to 7 p.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Neola. Funeral Mass, Friday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Neola. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Neola. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Patrick's Church Foundation of Neola, St. Albert School of Council Bluffs, the West Pottawattamie 4-H Extension Trust Fund, the Neola or Underwood Fire and Rescue Squads, or a favorite charity of your choice. The family thanks the staff of Bethany Heights and Every Step Hospice for their wonderful care.
