John Meyer Obituary

Lifetime resident of Council Bluffs, John moved to Spokane, Wash., in 2017 to be near his daughter, Kim. He was born to the late Henry and Virginia Meyer, Council Bluffs Funeral Directors. In 1951, John graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School where he excelled in sports and was senior class president. Following graduation, he attended Southern Methodist University, University of Nebraska at Omaha and Mortuary School, in Dallas, Texas. He also served in the U.S. Army, being stationed in Korea and Japan. For many years John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, in Council Bluffs. It was John's father who built the first modern funeral chapel in Council Bluffs. Following in his father's footsteps, John was a funeral director where he was a co-owner of Meyer Funeral Home and was also a funeral director with Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, whom he married in 1955. He is survived by daughter, Kim, of Spokane; nieces and nephews. Graveside service and burial of cremated remains, Friday, May 5, 2023, at 1 p.m., at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Refreshments and fellowship will follow at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 E. Pierce St., Council Bluffs.
