Mary Stein

1937 - 2023

Northfield - Mary Stein, 86, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, June 20, 2023.

Mary Grace McCall was born on January 4, 1937, in North East, Maryland, to Frank and Alice (Baker) McCall. She grew up and graduated from high school there. Mary worked at a hardware store out of high school until moving to South Minneapolis in 1964. She worked at the Bureau of Engraving, where she met Gary Donald Stein. They were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lakeville on February 4, 1972. In 1975, they moved from Lakeville to Northfield, where Mary started working at 3M in Dundas and eventually worked started working as a dispatcher for the Northfield Police Department in the early 80s. She never got her driver's license, so a squad car would pick her up each morning for work and take her home after. Mary would jokingly say, "no one got to ride in a police car as much as her." She retired in 2003 when Owatonna started doing the dispatch for Northfield.

In her free time, Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing, taking pictures, and most importantly, watching her son and grandson race in Elko and Wisconsin Dells. Her and Gary had a motor home for a time and enjoyed travelling. Mary was someone who loved being around people, especially kids. She was someone who always thought of others and put their needs before her own. Mary was caring, generous, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Mary is survived by her husband, Gary; children, Michael (Kim) of Rapid City, SD, Carl (Debbie) Swanson of Eagan, and Gordy (Renee) Swanson of Elko New Market; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill McCall of Elkton, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents and children Wally and Diana.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, July 6, 2023, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Northfield. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be in Acacia Park Cemetery in Mendota Heights.
