Agnes WIESCHENBERG Obituary

WIESCHENBERG Agnes Julianna, Ph.D. (nee Arvai), of Englewood, on August 22, 2009. Born on March 10, 1938 in Budapest, Hungary, she escaped Hungary with her sister Katherine and her parents John and Eva Arvai in 1956, at the end of the Hungarian Revolution. After coming to the United States, Agnes completed her Bachelor's in Engineering at Queens College in New York City and was employed at Weidlinger Associates, a structural engineering and consulting firm. Agnes married her husband of 48 years, Peter H. Wieschenberg, in 1961 and traveled with him to Germany when he was drafted into the US Army during the Berlin Crisis. While in Germany, she continued her education in mathematics at the University of Maryland's Mannheim Campus. After returning to the United States, she continued her studies toward a Master's Degree at Fairleigh Dickenson University, where she became a Teaching Fellow. Subsequently, she earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Columbia University and was Professor of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City for over 30 years. She has published numerous articles on mathematics and interviewed many of the best mathematical minds of the 20th Century. Her book, "Coffeehouse Mathematics in Early Twentieth Century Europe," has just been published. Her love was her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother Eva and sister Katherine, both of Queens, NY, son, Thomas (Erika) of Towaco, NJ, a daughter Andrea Canapary (Edward) of Yosemite, CA and five grandchildren Scott, Conner and Bryan Wieschenberg and Maya and Dawn Canapary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rogosin Kidney Center, 505 East 70th St., New York, NY 10021. Dearest Peter and all your family,
