Alan Hoffman Obituary
Alan Hoffman
Glen Rock - Alan Hoffman of Glen Rock, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2021 at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ at age 76, after a long illness. He died in peace and was surrounded by his loving family both near and far (by facetime). Beloved by his family, friends and associates, this gifted man, was an actuary for about forty years.
Alan Hoffman was born to Augusta (Gussie) Osborn Hoffman and Harry Hoffman on June 24, 1944 in the Bronx, New York. From an early age, he loved learning and was an outstanding student. He had many friends and like other New York City kids, enjoyed playing sports like punch ball and baseball. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and then graduated from the City College of New York, receiving his B.S. in mathematics. Alan earned his graduate degree in mathematical statistics from Stanford University.
Upon earning his M.S. degree, Alan entered the U.S. Public Health Service and served in the Statistics Department, establishing statistical studies on the nuclear fallout effect on the areas surrounding the atomic bomb testing sites. Having served three years in the U.S. Public Health Service, Alan joined the Equitable as an actuarial student. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in May 1974. He was also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and The Actuarial Society of Greater New York. During his professional career, Alan devoted time and assistance to various committees of the Society, especially in mentoring student actuaries. While at Equitable and Equicorp (a joint venture of Equitable and HCA), Alan's responsibilities included pricing new products in the insurance industry as well as case consulting. In 1990, Cigna acquired Equicorp and Alan served as the actuarial representative for Equicorp on implementing best underwriting practices for the two companies.
In December 1990, Alan joined Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield as Director in the Actuarial Department, serving as liaison between Actuarial and Corporate Marketing. He was promoted to AVP and Actuary in 1994. He retired from Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2007 to pursue his outside interest and to spend time in his garden.
Alan married Heddi Martynowicz in 1975 in New York City. They moved to Glen Rock, NJ in 1977, where Alan could explore and hone his gardening skills. He and Heddi created a special garden, experimenting with different plant combination in flower beds. Alan and Heddi loved to entertain family and friends at home. His door was always open to help his family, friends and neighbors, and lend a listening ear. He shared his time and talents tutoring to high school students in math. He was truly a "mensch".
Alan is survived by his loving wife, Heddi, his brother Karl Hoffman, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ted Martynowicz and Ruth Lane Martynowicz, nephew and niece Michael and Rachel Martynowicz, his first cousins Paul and Michael Raskas and Judy Silberman, other cousins, extended family and dear friends. His parents, Augusta and Harry Hoffman, and in-laws, Cecelia and Nicholas Martynowicz predeceased him.
Alan was a fighter who successfully overcame many health challenges over the past 10 years. We wish he had been able to stay with us longer, but take solace that he is now at peace. God bless his soul and may he rest in peace. A celebration of Alan's life will be held in June at the Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood New Jersey. Arrangements by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn, NJ.
