Alfred Tallia Obituary

TALLIA Alfred S., 90, a longtime Paterson merchant and resident, passed away Monday, January 12, 2009 at home in Pompton Plains where he had lived for the past five years. Visitation will be at St. Brendan's Church, Clifton, Friday from 10 AM-12 PM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Paterson. Born in Sandy Hill, Paterson, on September 20, 1918, Alfred was the second son of Otto Tallia and Rosina Malarini, and lived for most of his life in the Lakeview section of the city. A graduate of Paterson public schools, he received a wartime degree in business from Rutgers University. With his brother, John, who predeceased him, he was the proprietor of Tallia's Delicatessen and Catering, a 21st Avenue business that served the greater Paterson community for 45 years. A member of Toastmasters International in Ridgewood, he enjoyed public speaking. After retirement, he remained active assisting seniors with tax preparations, working in sales at Macy's Willowbrook, and serving as an usher at his church. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Julia Maron, he is survived by his two children, Alfred F. Tallia, MD (Elizabeth), of Pottersville, New Jersey, and Amy T. Bidwell, Esq, (Dale) of Plain City, Ohio, and his grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Tallia, and Evan Kerns. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation to a favorite charity be made in his memory. The M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains is in charge of arrangements. www.scanlanfuneralhome.com
