Alvin Sauer Obituary

SAUERAlvin H., Prominent Real Estate Developer and Jewish Leader. Alvin H. Sauer, a well-known Bergen County commercial real estate developer, died on Saturday, April 21st at Valley Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 79. He had started his career as a real estate broker specializing in chain store leasing and covered the northeastern region of the country from Boston to Philadelphia for more than five decades. He was particularly noted for his expertise in the food market industry and was involved in shopping center development throughout the region as a result of his unique standardization of industry requirements which are commonplace today. He was among the first to employ the study of demographics, highway patterns, parking ratios and such esoteric things as the assortment of ethnic foods which could sell best in a given trading area. His advise and counsel were sought by many chain store executives and real estate investors. Mr. Sauer was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey where he attended local schools. He received a Bachelor's Degree in English at the Heights Campus of New York University, where he was awarded the Perstare et Praestare Key. He was a member of Zeta Beta Tau. He started his business career as an advertising copy writer. This was cut short by the Korean War. He served as a special investigator in the U.S. Army Audit Agency. His first wife, Norma Brawer Sauer, died in 1959. He had served as a trustee of Jewish Family Service, B'Nai Brith, Mid Bergen Mental Health Center, Jewish Federation of North Jersey and Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and the National Association of Realtors. He also served as a trustee of Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes for more than forty years and was President of the Congregation for six years. Mr. Sauer resided in Wyckoff, New Jersey and is survived by his wife of almost 45 years, Susan Low Sauer, a son, Richard H. Sauer of New York City, three daughters, Elizabeth J. Sauer of New York City, Stephanie Sauer Pasternak of Tenafly and Jennifer Low Sauer of Ramsey and five grandchildren, Hannah, Jonah, and Eli Pasternak and Olivia and Gabriel Pincus and predeceased by one granddaughter Batya Sauer Casson. Services will be 12 noon Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Barnert Temple, 747 Route 208 South, Franklin Lakes, NJ. Interment will follow at Mount Nebo Cemetary, Totowa, NJ. For further information, please call Barnert Temple at: 201-848-1800. Arrangements are by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn, NJ.
