August Sodora Obituary

August "Augie" A. Sodora, Sr.

August was born on February 2, 1932 and lived with his parents and younger siblings in Garfield before moving to Hasbrouck Heights. Augie and his wife Mary Lou married in 1958 at Corpus Christi Church and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. They lived on Madison Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights with their four children until they moved to Saddle River in 1968 where they then resided for 35 years. They fondly remember the sweet neighborhood in Hasbrouck Heights and over the years shared many fond memories and stories with their children. The years in Saddle River in those days were also memorable. It was a great time for Augie and his family. Mary Lou and Augie were snowbirds and loved to winter in Palm Beach Florida.

In addition to Mary Lou, Augie is survived by his son August Jr., his wife Paula, their three children August III, Paul and Gina, his daughter Mary Jo (Jodi) Saladucha, her husband Brad, their daughter Mary Jo, his daughter Mary Teresa (Teri), his son Christopher, his wife Michelle and their three children, Ryan, Christian and Emilie. Augie is also survived by his three younger sisters, Rosemarie Perrelli, Laura Matthews and Tony McAlevey.

With only a formal high school education, a proud graduate of Hasbrouck Height High, he achieved success in both his business and social lives. He was a proud member of the Naval Reserves for 8 years. Augie worked at Swift Electrical Supply Company from 1950 until his retirement 50 years later, first learning the business from his father and then years later taking up the roll of President. Mary Lou and the children remember him working late nights on Tuesday and Thursdays when the store was open for years.

Augie was for many years a Director of the Board at Union City Savings Bank and later at Oritani Savings Bank. His best recreation time was at White Beeches Golf and Country Club where he developed a long list of great friends. He became a Board Member there and was President of the Board of Governors for 2 years. He was a member of many committees for more than 30 years. He was a member in long standing of the Columbians of NJ, an Italian American philanthropic organization, and a member of St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church in Saddle River NJ since 1968.

Augie will be remembered for his wit by his many friends and almost 200 Twitter Followers. He loved America and the traditional values that make America great. He had a memorable, smart, and quick sense of humor making him a joy and engaging fun person to spend time with. He will be missed greatly by his family, his friends, and the many people he gladly engaged with for years.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass, at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, March 6, 2021, at St. Gabriel R.C. Church in Saddle River.
