I was a friend of Donald, met him in Rijeka in Yugoslavia on his way around the world. I told him at that time I wanted to escape from communism regime in Yugoslavia, since I spoke a fluent English. He gave me his address back in US and when I succeded to escape, I wrote him a letter from Italy, not expecting much, just to let him know. To my syrprise he put the whole machinery in motion, he sent me some money, clothes and more than anything started all the paper work with WWC to get me to US. I did get accpted to come to US as a refugee. I arrived on Decmber 9 in New York, Don picked me up from the ship and and drove me to his home in Manhasset. I met his mother, Mrs Knies, his brother Richard and his wife. He helped me get a job in New York and we stayed good friends until I was sent to US Army and Korea. Then I lost track of Don. He gave me a copy of his book and signed it unfortunately I lost it. He was a fine fentleman, and great guy. Thanks to him I have had a good life in US. I am now 83 and have a wife and two sons and we live in Tucson, US. I am sorry I had no chance to see him in all those years, but have him in memories and think often about him. May he rest in peace. He wrote about me in his book, somewhere in the middle of the book as I remember, but I wish I had a copy of his book. I will try to find it and keep it in memory of Don.
