Edith Wingens Obituary

WINGENS
Edith Irene (geb. Seligman), 86, of Cliffside Park died Thursday, December 8, 2011. Born and raised in Loehnberg, Germany until age 13, she was a Holocaust survivor who lived in Hartford, Connecticut and Manhattan (Washington Heights and Inwood sections) before moving to Cliffside Park 36 years ago.
At the age of 14 she was interred at Camp Westerbork in Holland. Westerbork was a Nazi concentration camp from which tens of thousand of Jews were sent to death camps in Eastern Europe. She was twice scheduled to be deported, but was saved from that fate. On April 12, 1945 Westerbork was liberated by Canadian Mounties and Edith was one of only 876 souls to be liberated. Edith married Herman Wingens who she had met in Westerbork. They immigrated to the United States shortly after their wedding in Amsterdam in 1946.
Edith was actively involved in numerous organizations over the course of her 65 years in the United States, including Temple Israel Community Center, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, B'nai Brith (Leo Baeck Lodge) and the Hebrew Tabernacle. She had a supportive and loving network of enduring friendships, some of which dated back to her childhood.
Predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Herman Wingens and by her daughter Marion Wingens, she is survived by her son Gary Wingens and daughter-in-law Helene of Livingston, son-in-law Robert Raciti of Fort Lee and five grandchildren, Evan, Hilary, Andrew, Jonathan and David.
Funeral Service to be held on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 10 AM at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601. In lieu of flowers, donations to Temple Israel Community Center, 207 Edgewater Road Cliffside Park, NJ 07010, would be appreciated.
