Eugene Packer Obituary

Eugene R. Packer

- - Following a valiant two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Dr. Eugene Packer died at the age of 69 on Friday, September 7, 2018, in the company of his wife and daughter. Known to most as Gene, he was born in Bronx, New York to Morton and Gertrude Packer, and raised in Yonkers. A 1967 graduate of Bronx High School of Science, he earned a B.S. in Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1971, an M.A. from New York University in 1975, and a PhD in 2004. Dedicated to a life of service to education and the community, Dr. Packer taught high school chemistry and physics for nearly 30 years mostly at Bergenfield and Fair Lawn High Schools, and he was an adjunct professor of psychology at William Paterson University. A lifelong fencer, he bestowed his passion for the sport upon young fencers as the fencing coach at Fair Lawn High School for 20 years, earning Coach of the Year in 2016. A certified armorer and frequent officiant of fencing competitions throughout New Jersey and New York, he was also a member of the New Jersey Division of the United States Fencing Association Executive Committee. In addition to his love of fencing, Dr. Packer was an outspoken advocate for the refugee community. As an expert in post-traumatic stress disorder, he counseled and treated refugees seeking political asylum in the United States, and testified on their behalf as an expert witness in court, always pro bono. An avid collector of books and music lover, Dr. Packer also adored animals; especially his cats. Always the joker and prankster, his infectious smile lit up a room, and he earned the nickname "King of Dad Jokes" from his daughter, who always laughed at his jokes, no matter how many times he told the same one. Dr. Packer is survived by a village of family and friends who will never forget the exceptional life he lived, or the way he touched each of their lives, including: his wife, Sheila (née Prail); his daughter, Rachel Packer and her husband Joe Ratliff (who he loved watching baseball with); his step-children, Sara Weinberg Williamson and Adam Weinberg (who he considered his own); his grandchildren, Hannah and Easton Williamson; and his sister, Shelly Packer. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton, New Jersey, and shiva will be observed at the home of Sheila Packer on Thursday and Friday from 2:00-7:00 p.m., and at the home of Rachel Packer on Saturday and Sunday from 2:00-7:00 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to Casa de Esperanza non-profit organization for immigrants and refugees in Bound Brook, New Jersey (casaesperanzanj.com; 732-748-1111), the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro, New Jersey, and the Fair Lawn High School Fencing Program.

Gene was a Kean professor with my dad. I know Gene was very fond of my dad, and my dad very fond of him. I had spoken to him during the summer, when my father was going through different but difficult medical crisis. Unfortunately we lost to greats this year, Gene and now my dad. I hope his daughter and wife know how special he was to my dad. May his memory be a blessing. With love, Nina

I knew Gene from close to 30 years of B'nai Brith softball. He always had a smile on his face, he always had a nice word to share and he always, okay much more often than not, got a hit off me and I honestly didn't mind one bit. My last conversation with him at the end of the 2017 season was a truly enjoyable one and I will treasure that memory. He was a wonderful man who I know touched many, many lives. God rest your soul Gene.

Gene made so many memories for me and my family. We will treasure these moments forever and always remember everything that he taught to my children, my students, and myself. He has been one of my closest friends over these years and has always been able to bring a smile to my face. As a helper and coach to my students at Freehold Fencing Academy, I have seen how personable he was and how great of a teacher he was. I will miss him dearly and I know his memories will last forever with everyone.

Condolences are hard, especially as words seem futile in trying to express a depth of emotion one hardly fathoms. But this we know: that the G-d of Comfort will comfort the family with more than the collective level of Comfort we all express. Rest well, Mr Eugene Packer.

Gene was such a warm, intelligent, and funny guy. I've known him for thirty years as a colleague at William Paterson University; I will miss his frank opinions, sharp wit, and infectious smile.

Gene was a dedicated and caring teacher, who always brought wonderful stories from his life experiences! He helped so many people as an educator, as a strong advocate in the judicial system providing support for people escaping trauma, and in so many other ways. I can't help but cherish the time I had to get to know and work with him, and will miss him greatly. ~ Mike Gordon, William Paterson Univ.

Superlatives come to mind, but seem to be inadequate when describing Gene and what he meant to me.
Having been honored to have been considered "friend" for over 45 years, I am struck with a profound sense of loss. Our backgrounds and lives have been very different, yet we formed a bond of friendship that has endured.
Sheila, know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers as we can only imagine your sense of loss. I know his life and example has set in motion ripples, that will be emulated as those he has touched, in one setting or another, live their lives.

Gene was not only my teacher but also my fencing coach. His love for the sport helped me become a better fencer. He helped me during my time as a fencer as well as helping me direct. He was such an amazing, sweet guy and I will miss him terribly.

Gene was a colleague of mine at Bergenfield High School for a number of years. He was a very knowledgeable person and a real presence in the classroom. I enjoyed knowing him and offer sincere condolences for your loss. As a fellow cat lover I have made a contribution to the Bergen County Animal Shelter in his name.
