George Barasch Obituary

BARASCH
George, died on August 11, 2013 at the age of 102. He lived a long and illustrious life. After graduating from St. John's University and School of Law, he became involved in the labor movement and was the Founder and President of the Allied Trades Council and Principal Officer of Local 815, International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He created many employee benefit funds including the Union Mutual Pension Plan, the Allied Welfare Health Plan, and the Vacation Fringe Benefit Fund. He Founded the Union Mutual Benefit Retiree Association and created the Union Mutual Foundation and the Union Mutual Medical Fund to provide educational and medical benefits for retired union workers. Until the time of his death he remained active as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Allied Educational Foundation, a charitable and educational foundation. During his illustrious and productive career, he served as Research Professor of Management at Stevens Institute of Technology, President of the New York Cardiac Center, Labor Consultant to the Queens County District Attorney, Director of the Queens County Crime Prevention Board and Member of the Honor Legion of the New York Police Department. He also served as the editor of the Unity News and the Cardiac Journal. His work in the fields of education and medicine has been recognized with achievement awards from the New York Cardiological Society, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Accuracy in Media, the Washington Legal Foundation, Stevens Institute of Technology and the Korean Association of New York. He is survived by his loving family: Stephen and Charlene Barasch, Linda and Richard Glazer, Jayne and Bernard Troy as well as four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sally, his loving wife of 67 years, predeceased him. He will be remembered with great fondness by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and will remain in our hearts forever. Services will be held today at Eden Memorial Chapels, 327 Main Street, Fort Lee, NJ 07024 at 12:30 PM.

George Barasch was a great man who deserves all respect accorded him! He helped many people obtain educations at the finest schools and with high honors. In addition to his many accomplishments, he was a fine generous human being who will be revered always by his family and friends.
