Dear Mr. Tatum, I'm not sure if you remember me? I was pretty much, one of the few hundreds of fans you had during your Raider Nation career.... But off the field, you'd would frequent the Chevron gas station at Otis ave. and Park St. for gas. I would vividly recall those days of filling your mercedes bens vehicle with fuel. I never would bother you for an autograph but was truly honored you'd frequent the full service pumps. Rest in peace, mr. Tatum. Your football skills are truly missed.

When the Raiders wasn't doing well in a game I always thought of Jack Tatum. I knew that Jack had to put the fear in the opposing team and turn around the momentum of the game. I depended heavily on Jack getting the opposing team back in line. He was what the Raiders was all about.

Here is in my opinion, that without any questions asked, MR. JACK TATUM was the most aggressive, bone chilling safeties that ever played in the nfl. Off the field, Jack Tatum was a quiet man. When Jack was doing warmups he would be getting more angry by the minute who believed in instilling absolute fear in a recievers mind, that if a reciever
ever came into his attacking pathway, you would probably drop the catch, knowing that you were going to recieve the hadest, mind-controlling hit. Jack Tatum was regarded as the #6 most feared safeties in the NFL. Jack as well as almost every football player, knows that if they really looked a Jack Tatum's hits, no discussion would be needed.
Jack Tatum was the hardest hitting football player that ever played in the NFL. #1 THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can remember all the times my dad would call you when I was acting out of line and just your voice would straighten me up very fast. I met Jack and Denise a number of years back to install a new furnace for them. They were such nice people. Denise taking care of us workers with beverages to keep us from getting dehydrated from working in their attic. Jack would give us a tour of his life and career. Signed jerseys for us, which I still have and will always have. After the job was done we became friends, and have been friends since. Jack and Denise have a special place in my heart. I will pray for the both you and your children and will never forget the kindness that you showed for a stranger that entered your home. You will always be my friend and I thank you for the kindness you have showed me as a human being. MAY GOD BLESS YOU JACK AND YOUR FAMILY TOO!!

Jack Tatum stood for what it meant to be a Raider, but even more he presented himself as a Man.His quiet demeanor and watchful eye never gave insight into a world where he was King and changed the way his position was played. He will be missed, and now the Nation (Raider) just needs to hear from the Hall of Fame where his efforts can be appreciated by all

To the Family and Friends,

Word came to me that our friend John David "Jack" Tatum, beloved husband and father, died of a heart attack at the age of 61. I was unbelieving then and I am still in a state of disbelief now.

I first met Jack while both of us were students at Ohio State. We had much in common. Also, we were the same age with less than a month separating our birthdays. I always reminded him, since I was a month older that meant that I was that much wiser than him.

Once while visiting with him at his dorm, Woody Hayes arrived on the floor. As the players gathered-round, Woody looked at me and said, "You are not one of my football players, but you look like one, so why don't you come-out for the team."

Man, I was on cloud nine. After we got back to the dorm room, I looked at Jack and he looked back at me with that wry smile of his. That smile made me pause in my jubilation and warily recount the testimonies that came from his own teammates about the punishing tackles that he meted out on a regular basis. That smile brought my aspirations back to earth...with a thud.

"Tate" was something special and over the years, I marveled at his magnificent career. God bestowed athletic gifts upon Jack Tatum that he did not give to others. He was a world-class All Pro player with an uncompromising approach to the game of football.

More important than that, he was just a darn good person. Quiet and reserved off the field of football, I will leave it to others to debate his public image versus the man that I knew privately as friend.

After I departed Ohio State, my career as a professional soldier and Jack as a professional football player obviously meant that we lived in parallel worlds. However, on those occasions when we did get together, we greeted each other like long lost cousins, which was to my unending delight.

Now, we have come to this day. I call on all True Believers to mark the passing of John David "Jack" Tatum with great reverence. We are once again humbled by the power of God and his tender mercy as we submit to his will and surrender the soul of our brother Jack to God and his heavenly host.

To Denise, the children, and the family; with undeniable love comes undeniable grief and we mourn your loss with you.

With this momentous event, we once again call into question God's infinite wisdom. In fact God wants us to question his actions, because when we seek his truth, we find his answer. And his answer strengthens our faith as Christians.

Although Jack was an amputee through sickness, his broken body has now once again been made whole.

Michael L.Nelson, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, ret.

As a fan who was born your last year in the NFL, I was even more impressed by your character off the field than your ability on it. You are what being a Raider is all about and even though I was born too late to see you play live, the 1973 Jack Tatum jersey is the only authentic I've ever owned or wanted to own.

I wear the #32 with pride, as you were a genuine person who did things for the right reasons, even if some did not agree or understand them. I pray your loved ones find peace and comfort knowing how many strangers you had an impact on. RIP Jack Tatum, you have truly earned it.

I have to add something: David Jacquez passed away tonight after complications from diabetes caused his liver to shut down. He was on a wait list too and had almost identical health issues over the years. He was a beloved family member and a dedicated Raiders fan.

I don't know how Heaven works, but if you see him please let him know he doesn't need to be afraid and I'll eat our share of BBQ ribs at the home opener.

Thanks for the memories and for being a true Raider.

A man that his children, all of his family in fact, can truly be proud of forever. His extended family, we the Raiders fans, feel exactly the same way. Watching Jack 35 years ago and talking with him two years ago, and everything in between, I feel like he has been a huge part of our extended family. I will carry forever the pride at having him have been a light in our lives and an unrivaled presence on the field. I hope that peace and understanding come quickly to his family and that the pain they feel now gives way to an incredible sense of pride and happiness at knowing that so long as they live and keep the memory alive so shall Jack be here among us making us proud.

Thank you for so many years of greatness Jack. I will never forget.

Mr. Tatum left a lasting impression on diehard NFL football fans like no other. Whether you loved him or hated him, you had to respect his impact on the game of pro football. The name itself just instantly brought thrills and chills to your body and mind because everyone knew that he could hit like no other. Maybe one day I will meet him on the other side, "Lord" willing. Thanks for the way you played the game. May you rest in peace and God bless your family.

To Tatum's family, "Jack" will always be remembered. His playing always helped raise enthusiasm in classic games for teammates. I was at Super Bowl 11, and remember his HIT! I literraly thought a head came off from where I was sitting. What I called; "The HIT heard around the NFL World!" Got to hang with him at Latin event in the South Bay and some tailgates. Great to share with. God bless your family and his memories I share with others, my children and friends too young to remember. I'll be at his viewing today.
