MURRAY Joseph passed away peacefully and painlessly on August 30, 2008 in a South Jersey Hospital in the loving presence of his children and many of his grandchildren. He was 84 years old and had been a lifelong resident of New Milford prior to moving to an assisted living facility in May, 2008 when he resigned his position as a New Milford Councilman for health reasons. He had served as Chairperson of the Rent Leveling Board, Member of the Planning Board, Member of the Senior Citizen Advisory Board and elected member of the Democratic County Committee. He had previously served as Postmaster of New Milford, Bergenfield, Englewood and Englewood Cliffs. He was a Master Postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service Training & Development Institute. Prior to his postal career, he was a Patrolman for the New Milford Police Department. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corp, having served from 1942-1945 in World War II and from 1950-1951 in the Korean Conflict. He had been a long-time parishioner at Ascension R.C. Church where he served in various volunteer capacities, including President of the Parish Council. He had been a member of VFW Post #4290, St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council #3814, New Milford Athletic Club, New Milford Senior Citizen Club, New Milford Democratic Club, Marine Corp League-Gooney Bird Detachment and the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ellen and is survived and loved by his adoring children, Kathleen Marshall and her husband George, Joseph P. Murray and his wife Lyn, Michael Murray and his wife Michelle and Mary Ellen Murray and her husband Hal Scholer. He is survived by his loving grandchildren, Kristen and George Marshall, Jason, Lisa, Julie, Erin, Kelly, Shannon, Megan, Ryan and Katie Murray and his great-grandchildren Jake and Owen Milnes. Joe Murray was well liked and he will be fondly remembered. Friends may come to the Beaugard Funeral Home, 869 Kinderkamack Road, River Edge on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A Mass will be held at Ascension RC Church, Carnation Drive, New Milford on Thursday at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at the George Washington Memorial Cemetery, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Knights of Columbus Council #3814, 199 River Road, New Milford, NJ 07646.

Working with Joe on any level was an honor. I am sure that when he gets passed St Peter he will be named Postmaster of Heaven. My sympathies with the family and a special hello to Mike.
