COSTELLO Marie Winberry, 91, passed away April 6, 2010. Marie was born March 21,1919 to Mary McKeon Winberry and Eugene L. Winberry in Woodridge, NJ, and raised in Rutherford. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 50 years, John L. Costello, M.D.Marie graduated from St. Mary's High School, Rutherford. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Fordham University in 1941, and worked in adoption at Angel Guardian Home in Brooklyn. Through them, she received a fellowship to continue studying at Fordham where she graduated with a master of arts degree from the School of Social Services in 1944. She continued her social work career in adoption at Catholic Charities of Westchester, NY, and then at State Charities Aid on East 23rd Street in Manhattan.She was a longtime resident of Clifton, NJ, prior to moving to Williamsburg, VA.Marie served on the Board of Directors of the Clifton Mental Health League where she volunteered and conducted group therapy sessions. She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Church, Clifton, since 1956 where she was an active member of the PTA, the Rosary Society and founding president of the Prime Timers Club for seniors, and served two years in that post. She volunteered at Eva's Kitchen in Paterson for 14 years, serving lunches in their soup kitchen. Marie also served on the Hospital Auxiliary of St. Francis Hospital, Jersey City, where her husband was on the surgical staff.Marie leaves six children: four daughters, Ann Gaudreaux, Maryellen Dunbar, Meg Jacobs and Shelagh Burke; two sons, Richard Costello and John Costello, Jr.; eleven grandchildren, Andrea Dooley, Kate Costello, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Lorin Salem, Zoe Scofield, Colleen and James Costello, Kara and Kellen Dunbar, Rachael and Malachy Burke; and five great-grandchildren, Thomas V, Dakota and Harley Fitzpatrick, and Liam and Quinn Dooley.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Angel Guardian Guild/Mercy First, 6301 12th Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11219, or Fordham University, Director of Gift Planning, Office of Development & University Relations, 888 Seventh Ave., 7th Fl., New York, NY, 10019.Visitation hours: Friday, April 23, 5-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon, April 24 at St. Phillip the Apostle Church, 797 Valley Rd., Clifton.
