Paul Berman Obituary
Paul E., of Hillsdale, NJ unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013.
Born in Manhattan, NY, December 15, 1950 to Jack and Sylvia Berman and raised in Brooklyn, NY. As owner and founder of Focus Eye Health and Vision Care in Hackensack, he had been serving Bergen County since 1976. As a founder and Global Clinical Director of the Special Olympics' Opening Eyes and Healthy Athletes programs, Paul received many accolades including: the 2007 "Spirit Award for Special Lifetime Global Leadership in Promoting Human Dignity" and, in 2011, White House "Champions of Change" among many others. Opening Eyes has screened over 325,000 athletes since its inception in 2001. Paul's leadership has cultured a program with 20,000 volunteers in 80 countries, helping provide over 100,000 prescription eyeglasses to Special Olympic Athletes. Paul was also a member of Lion's Club International.
Surviving are his loving wife, Diane Berman (Hillsdale, NJ) his adoring children, Brent, Seth and Rebecca Berman, Jamie and AJ Bianco, Matt Lilien, Brian and Chelsea Lilien. His brother Steven Berman and wife Ellie Berman. His mother-in-law Bessye Shulman, and grandchildren Brooke Berman and Ryan Bianco.
Services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, November 13th at Gutterman and Musicant, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ
In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's name to: Special Olympics Healthy Athletes, 1133 19th Street NW, Washington D.C. would be appreciated.

Today I needed to make an appointment for my daughter's annual eye check up. I was so shocked and saddened to know that Dr. Berman passed away since last Nov 2013. He was such an excellent eye doctor; very personable .My daughter had been his patient ever since she started wearing eyeglasses from first grade, to now that she is 20 years old. Dr. Berman is a true lost to the community. May he rest in peace. He will be missed

I just found out today when I called for my annual eye exam, and I was so disraught and in shock, I didnt make the appointment. I was his patient for 12yrs. He was the kindest, sweetest, best doctor who always greeted you with a smile. My condolences to his family and staff.

My wife Joanne and I found out, just today; that DR. Berman has passed away. Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news. We have both been patients of DR. I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM A MUTUAL FRIEND IN CALIFORNIA A FEW DAYS AGO WHO WAS AN UNDERGRADUATE AN PACIFIC UNIVERSITY WHILE PAUL AND I WERE ATTENDING THE COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY. PAUL WAS A YEAR BEHIND ME BUT ALWAYS HAD IDEAS AND THOUGHTS OF A MAN FAR AHEAD OR HIS TIM. PAUL WAS ALWAYS SMILING AND GENERATED A POSITIVE ATTITUDE ABOUT SCHOOL , FRIENDS AND LIFE TOWARD ANYONE IN HIS PRESENCE. HE WAS ALWAYS THINKING "OUTSIDE THE BOX" LONG BEFORE THE PHRASE WAS COINED. PAUL VISITED MY HOME ON CAPE COD IN THE EARLY 80'S AND STILL SMILING TO WHICH HE SAID"I HAVE ONLY BEEN HERE FOR TEN MINUTES AND I AM ALREADY RELAXED! THAT WAS OVER 30 YEARS AGO. Dr.Paul Berman was one of the most caring and passionate Doctors I have ever had the great pleasure of knowing He not only treated me as a patient but also made me feel like a special caring friend for the past 25 years. I always looked forward to seeing him as he greeted me with the most caring smile each and every time I saw him. I just found out today and it came as a complete shock with the tears flowing downing my face immediately as I learned of the great sorrow of his passing. Joyce and I were so sad to hear of Paul's passing. In the past two years, Paul and I would always talk about meeting you guys in NYC for a night on the town, but we could never get it done. From the early days I met Paul while working and playing together with the AOA Sports Vision Section to our many years spent together on these sports projects, there was no finer gentleman than Paul Berman! The Berman Family- I became a patient of Paul's when he moved into Dr Peter DeMauro's office in the late 80's. I was one of the first patients he saw and we soon became friendly and shared experiences of our lives. Paul also treated my entire family, and I believe my daughter still holds the record for most visits (39) while learning to wear contac lenses. Paul never gave up and kept encouraging her not to quit trying, he said he would always be there for her. He told me on my first visit that he was the best. I think this proves he was, he will be missed. I hope Brian continues in his footsteps.

I just heard of Dr. Berman's passing. He will be truly missed. I remembered when I first went to see him, I was told a year or two before that I was not able to get contacts..so when I told him this he said why not...I shrugged because I was crying now cause I really wanted contacts and I also said my vision is really, really bad and he said, "let me be the judge of that"....well I got my contacts and that was over 30 years ago....miss you already...taken from us too soon. I havent seen Paul to often in recent decades but I remember in 1996 he took time out solo to be at my surprise 25th anniversary. I knew Paul would be successful before getting into his New Jersey business...he was so dedicated and a workaholic a good father and always was ready for a good time. I am pleased to see all the feedback from this guestbook (Paul did believe in biofeedback or something like that) I am saddened that he didnt make it to retirement and enjoy the fruits of his labor and get a chance to channel his energy in the presence of his first borns and their offsprings,

I first met Paul in my senior year at SUNY Optometry way back in late 1975. He was a visual training resident. Our practices were in adjacent towns ( I'm in Saddle Brook, NJ ) and we would meet at seminars and conferences. We always discussed our European travel adventures and forthcoming trips. The world will not be the same without Paul in it. Though it's been a few years since I worked with Special Olympics, I'll never forget meeting Paul in Utah at my first large Training event. From that point forward, he was a big part of my experiences with SOI. He believed in people. He gave with gladness. He expected good work out of all of us. Diane, thank you for sharing him so generously with us, his colleagues, and with the athletes and many other people he touched around the world. The gift of knowing him was also a gift from you.

I only know Dr. Paul Berman thru the eyes of his son Seth. He was so loved, but even more than that he was a mentor, a cheerleader and a best friend. I was shocked and terribly saddened to learn of Paul's passing. In the truest sense of the word, Paul was a friend. How very sad it is that over the years we lost touch...and how much sadder it is that in this life we will not be able to rekindle the friendship we once shared. Paul was like no other friend I have come to know. Paul was someone to celebrate with and to laugh with. He was also a confidant and, with Paul, tough times became good times. Paul was a truly special person anyone would have been privileged to know. I will always see Paul with his infectious smile. It was truly an honour to work with and get to know such a kind, selfless and accomplished professional as Paul Berman. His energy and enthusiasm knew no bounds and he was a real inspiration to many. Paul Berman made a real difference to the lives of many people around the globe. He kindly flew to Paris in 2001 to present me with a plaque and this reminds me of Paul's work and dedication every day. I feel privileged to have been able to call him a friend. My sincere sympathy to Dr Berman's family. I will always remember when I was in high school back in 1977 and Dr Berman suggested I try contacts. I had trouble getting them in and he didn't want me to take them home until he knew I could insert them properly. I would stop by the office in Teaneck on my way home from school every day for what seemed like weeks. He would sit patiently with me every day and said "you'll get it. Come back tomorrow and we'll try again." Eventually I learned and successfully wore contacts for over 30 years. I was at his office about 5 years ago or so when I was in town for a visit. We had a good laugh about those days long ago when he was trying to teach me how to insert the contacts. He told me that after that any time he had a patient that had trouble with contacts he told them about me. I will always remember his patience and kindness. He was taken too soon. May he rest in peace.

I am completely in shock and devastated by Dr. Berman's sudden and unexpected passing. I just saw him a few days ago as he was treating me for conjunctivitis and I was planning to come in this week for a follow-up.
He was an extraordinary Dr. and person. We shared a common mission in helping those who live with special challenges and that bond was filled with much admiration on my part for all that he did to help other people.
He was truly wonderful and all the lives he touched will miss him dearly.

To say this was a shock and devasting does not come close to how I feel. Paul was a vibrant man full of life. I know Paul was close to the Kennedy family with regard to The Special Olympic Program.
Ted Kennedy gave the eulogy for his brother Bobby and this quote I believe can be said of my cousin Paul Berman.
"My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it,"

With great sadness I received the news of Paul's passing today.
I am sure we all have memories of the way he inspired us through the introduction of the Opening Eyes Program. I will never forget the first time I met with him in 2003. He impressed me with his ideas, altruism, and passion to help those in need.
Paul influenced me greatly throughout my professional career. He introduced many new philanthropic aspects to our work which had have a significant impact on my professional development.
His mentoring was always driven by humanity and friendship. Though his passing was much too early, our memories of his leadership will remain, and his dedication to the Opening Eyes Program will always guide us.
My thoughts are with Diane and their family, and I join those who mourn his death.
