Richard Harris Obituary

HARRIS - Richard A. died peacefully, in his home, on September 16, 2006. He was 88 years old. Born in New York City, he spent his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, before returning to New York. He moved to Hackensack in 1951, where he became an active community member. He was named a Trustee Emeritus, for the Johnson Public Library, served on the Board of Trustees for Temple Emeth in Teaneck and was a longtime active member of the Oritani Field Club. Dick as he was known to family and friends spent his 54-year retail career with R. H. Macy & Co. Inc. where he rose to Sr. Vice President of Store Operations and a member of the Board of Directors for Bamberger's NJ. As a young executive, he spent many years in the Herald Square and enjoyed the honor of being Grand Marshal for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade during the 1950's. He served his country during World War II as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. He is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn Sirotin. Cherished daughters, Peggy, Lynn and Liz. Adored grandchildren Jennifer Backer, Megan and Ryan Hardiman and Justin and Molly Schaeffer and great grandchildren, Garrett and Nina Backer. Funeral Service Monday September 18, 2006 11:30 AM at Gutterman-Musicant, Hackensack. Should friends desire donations in his honor may be made to the National Wildlife Federation or Temple Emeth-Rabbi Sigel Fund. The memorial period will be from Monday to Wednesday at the family residence.

Dick was one of the first executives I met after being hired as a manager in Paramus. He, Jud , Marian Weber, Jim Sadowsky and so many others remain in my memories of retail the way it should be. My sympathy in your loss.. we were a family back in the '60's. Linda
