Robert D. Freudenrich, 90, of Glen Rock, NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 11, 2021. He will be remembered for his full love of family, enthusiasm for friendships, unwavering passion for helping others, his enduring commitment to public service and volunteerism, and his avid gardening. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances M. (Feduska) Freudenrich; three sons and a daughter - David R. Freudenrich (Tara A. Howey), Connie L. Franchini, Douglas M. Freudenrich (Margaret) and Robert S. Freudenrich; six grandchildren - Charles D. Franchini of Butler, PA, Mackenzie L. and Kennedy A. Freudenrich of Pittsburgh, PA, and Timothy D., Matthew C. and Cara M. Freudenrich of Lumberton, NJ. Robert is also survived by his sister Margaret (Paul) Waibel of Ocala, FL.
Born June 2, 1931, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Ruth (Smith) Freudenrich and Charles H. Freudenrich Sr., Robert graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and from its Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). Having served first as Assistant Manager for Edgewood, PA, then Manager of Avalon, PA and Forest Hills, PA, he moved to Glen Rock, NJ in 1970, which he described as "a little bit of heaven" while serving as its Borough Manager for 27 years until his retirement on May 4, 1998.
Robert was an active member and past president of the Rotary Club of Ridgewood; active with the Glen Rock VFW Post 850 as a veteran of the Korean War, having served as an intelligence specialist with the U.S. Army Security Agency; served on the Board of Glen Courts Senior Housing; past member of the American Legion, the Freemasons, and Lions Club International; and Past President and member of the New Jersey Municipal Management Association. Additionally, Robert was instrumental in spearheading Glen Rock's first recycling center and an award-winning Glen Rock Borough Calendar. Robert was an active congregant of the Community Church of Glen Rock.
The memorial service will be held at the Community Church of Glen Rock on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Following the service, the family will hold a reception to greet relatives and friends in the church's Fellowship Hall.
