Stu Satalof Obituary

Trumpet player Stu Satalofcq worked with such legends as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin before finding a niche in Broadway orchestras.

The New Milford resident, who was with the current revival, of "Anything Goes" at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre CQ , died on Tuesday. He was 58.

He apparently suffered a heart attack, his wife, Sally Shumway, said.

The Philadelphia native picked up the trumpet at age 9. When he was 17, he spent the summer in a Wildwood production show, which led to a gig at the old Latin Casino in Cherry Hill.

He moved to Las Vegas in 1974 to work in the Dunes Hotel's production show.

During his 17 years based in Las Vegas, Mr. Satalof toured and recorded with a Who's Who of big-name entertainers and worked in Los Angeles on television and motion picture soundtracks, including those for the "Rocky" movies.

His most indelible career memory, his wife said, was flying with other band members to back up Elvis at a 1977 concert. The plane turned around after the pilot received word the King of Rock and Roll had died at his Memphis home.

"His quote to me always was, 'I was big in the '70s,'x" Shumway said.

Mr. Satalof met his wife, a violist, after he returned to the East Coast and began working on Broadway.

"We were both in the pit in the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Passion,'x" Shumway said. "He was on one side, the brass section, and I was on the other side, the string section."

They married in 1995. Their daughter, Sydney, was born in 1999.

Mr. Satalof's other Broadway credits include "Elaine Stritch at Liberty" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," and the revivals of "Company," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Bells are Ringing" and "Bye Bye Birdie."

Shumway said her husband was a kindhearted man and "the most doting dad."

"He could not say no to Sydney," Shumway said, adding she has photos of her husband teaching a 2-year-old Sydney how to play trumpet. (At present, she plays a couple of woodwind instruments oboe and flute.)

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Satalof is survived by his mother, Lois Satalof, and his brothers, Marc, Mitch and Bruce, all of Philadelphia.

The memorial service will be 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Boulevard Funeral Home, New Milford.

The first time I played with Stu was in 1977 when I was playing lead for Tom Jones. We used to play Caesar's Palace for two weeks at a time (four times a year) in the '70's. I was very young and rough in those days. Stu was a wonderful player and I'll always remember how great he played that Caesar's Palace fanfare! I remember Stu taking me aside a few times and kindly pulling my coat with regard to playing and behavior; he was a good guy.

The last time I saw Stu was in NYC during the fall of '07 when we played the show "Chicago" together shortly before I moved to Illinois in the spring of '08. He was subbing for John Frosk and I was subbing for Darryl Shaw. He was always very easy to play with and we had a few laughs that day about how long we had known each other.

What an untimely and tragic loss. He will be missed.

I worked with Stu at the Dunes Hotel and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. A great friend and Buddy while he was in Las Vegas. He will be missed by a lot of people.
