Thomas Matas Obituary
Mr. Matas was a captain with the Clifton Police Department before retiring in 1984. Later, he worked as a civilian employee of the department for five years. Also, he was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church, Clifton, for more than 50 years. In 1974, he was voted lifetime membership in Clifton Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 36.
Services were Monday at St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church, followed by interment at Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa.
Mr. Matas also is survived by his son, Thomas of Clifton; his other daughter, Linda Sommers of Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and an expected great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Eleanor Scholer; his daughter, Diane Fiore; his parents, Josephine and Emil; and his brothers, Emil and Raymond.

Mr Matas was a neighbor of mine,a fellow rider,to whom I looked up to and respected,Ran into him a few times on trips through NJ on the bike,remember the story of him travelling to California on the Honda..Godbless.

Just found out from my mom, Ruth Gruber, about Tom's death. So Very sorry to hear about it. He was a fun and wonderful man. When I think of him I always picture him on his motorcycle! All my love and lots of hugs to his family.
