John Grose

1941 - 2018

John Grose, originally from Nassau, BWI, born July 10, 1941, died of Renal failure in Bayfront Health Hospital, Punta Gorda, Florida on June 6, 2018. He was 77.

Born in Nassau and raised in Coral Gables, Florida, John graduated from Coral Gables HS in 1959. He entered Florida State University on a football scholarship the following fall. John earned his BS from FSU in 1964 where he met and married Margay Blasingame Grose. A daughter, Clarissa Margaret Elizabeth Grose, was subsequently born of that union. Completing his MBA in 1965, John won a Teaching Fellowship to the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The Fellowship and extensive practical experience in a wide range of industries, in particular, higher education, broadcast communication, energy utilities, and various service businesses afforded him the opportunity to complete his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. His area of concentration was Business Organization & Operation specializing in Management Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis for small & mid-sized businesses. After graduation John held professorial positions at Rutgers and Villanova Universities before joining SUNGARD Higher Education Services (SGHE Strategic Consulting Services) as Senior Principal Consultant in 1997.

Dr. Grose was a scholar-athlete in the truest sense of the word. He loved learning and he loved teaching. He studied anything that captured his imagination - from bridge to tennis, from golf to foreign languages, from computers to Old English history and a collector of maps. He loved to play Pro-Am tennis, was a ranked Middle States Amateur player, and a local tournament finalist and/or champion for a number of years. His academic achievements were matched by his athletic accomplishments well into his senior years. Dr. Grose, known as Skip to childhood friends and family, lived a happy and accomplished life. He was greatly loved and loved back. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly.

In addition to his daughter Clarissa and wife Margay, John is survived by his brother, Neil Grose; sister, Cynthia G. Dees; and a multitude of in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for John Howard Grose, Ph.D., a long time Main Line resident, will be held on Saturday, July 28 at 1:30 p.m. at St David's Episcopal Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The Rev W. Frank Allen will officiate.
