George Johnson Obituary

George Melvin "Mel" Johnson, 89, of Napoleon passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

He was born April 19, 1936, in Napoleon to Donald B. and Vivian (Mitchell) Johnson. He was a graduate of Napoleon High School and then joined the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve in 1961 and proudly served his country.

On Feb. 9, 1963, he married Joyce Salsbury, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2023.

Surviving are three sons, Dwayne of Ohio City, Ohio, Jeff (Cindy) of W. Virginia, and Mike (Cathy) of Napoleon; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite fur friend "Goldie." Mel's granddaughter Cora was his caregiver in his home before he was hospitalized.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Vivian; and three brothers, Richard, Paul and Walter.

George "Mel" was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, Napoleon. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and AMVETS, all of Napoleon.

Never succumbing to his 89 years of age, Mel was a motorcycle rider, belonged to the Legion Riders, and loved roller skating - on his 80th birthday a roller-skating party was held for which he participated! He also liked to cook.

Over his lifetime, he worked various jobs at various places to include L.S. Dunbar, Snyder Chevy, H.E. Baggett, Spanglers and did brick laying. Wherever Mel worked he got to know a lot of people, and never knew a stranger. He retired from Martin Diesel in 2022.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church, (9016 County Road P Napoleon) with an Odd Fellows service and funeral services beginning at 1 p.m., Pastor Steve North presiding. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Napoleon, with Military Honors provided by Napoleon American Legion Post #300.

Memorial contributions may be considered to Sharon United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Aaron D Crall

February 25, 2026

My name is Aaron Crall. I have been his mailman for the last 8+ years. This man was so awesome that we had conversations every other day. I'd walk across the street to harass him and he would flip the script and harass me. He made me laugh. He was a great person. We talked about the family at times we talked about the packerd everyday. And he showed my boys it once and said he was going to get it fixed and safe and take them on a drive. He took us to the basement and showed us the music box that I never remember what it's called but he was so excited when my 11 year old told me the name of it. He was impressed and just smiling so much. Thank you for all the great times that I got to share with this wonderful man.
