Glenn Miller Obituary

Glenn "Butch" Miller February 14, 1942 - July 25, 2013 Norwich - Glenn "Butch" Miller, 71, of Norwich, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Backus Hospital after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully. He was born in New London on February 14, 1942, to Booth and Rebecca (Tompkins) Miller and grew up in the Poquonock Bridge neighborhood in Groton. A childhood baseball and basketball standout, Glenn was praised as a "Nice Kid" who "might turn out to be a pretty fair hurler," whose "quietness and sincere efforts made him a hit with the fans" in a 1951 article in the New London Day. Glenn lettered in both sports as a student at Fitch High School, from which he graduated in 1960. He joined the United States Air Force in 1967, serving in Northern England (where his passion for golf began) and Las Vegas, NV, after working for Electric Boat and Pfizer. Glenn worked at Pfizer for over 30 years, earning a Bachelors degree from the University of New Haven along the way; he retired as an Inventory Manager in 1998. Glenn spent his retirement thoroughly enjoying the company of family and friends, traveling in the US and abroad, and perfecting his golf game. He was a member of the Norwich Golf Club for many years, serving as an officer; he was a Four-Ball Champion in 2000 and shot a hole-in-one on the 13th hole on May 6, 2011 in Norwich. Glenn was married to his high school sweetheart, Justine (Perry), who he met when he was 17. They shared 46 years of marriage, love, laughter, and companionship. Glenn adored Justine. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted daughter Monica, son-in-law Carl Wennerlind, and two doting grandchildren, Langston and Selma Wennerlind, aka Glenn's "buddies," all of New York City. Glenn also leaves two loving sisters, Joan Tobey and Ann Martin; and, two loving brothers, Booth "Chappy" Miller and Charlie Miller. The extended Miller-Perry family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins will also miss "Butch." A Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon at the Madry Temple, 25 Manwaring Street, in New London on Thursday, August 1, 2013. Calling hours will take place before the service at Madry Temple, from 10 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Norwich Golf Course Members' Scholarship Fund, 685 New London Turnpike, Norwich, CT 06360. Church and Allen Funeral Home of Norwich is in charge of arrangements, 860-889-2374. Please visit www.church andallen.com to leave an online tribute or condolence.

Justine, I'm really sorry for your loss and this is a loss for everyone who knew Glenn. He always brightened the day at the driving range. He was always so proud of Monica and her family and he gave me tips about being a grandfather. We'll all miss him.

To Butch's family- I was shocked and sadden when I read of Butch's passing. I also grew up in Poquonnock Bridge, which was a diverse community. Butch and I became friends due to mutual friends in the 'Project' before we were in school together. We both played in Groton's Babe Ruth League, on the Thames Electric team, our coach was Bob Falvey, a Poquonnock Bridge police detective, another good man. We were both 13, Butch was immediately a starter in the infield as well as a starting pitcher, he was so gifted. His cousin Jackie was also on the team, and the two of them carried us to the championship. At our last Fitch class reunion (50th) I got to speak with Butch for awhile; we both talked about our golf game, kids we grew up with, as well as our families. He was very happy. He still remained so very special. I hope you all will soon smile at all the great memories he created for you. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Butch was such a dear friend and mentor. Honestly, one of the best people I've ever been around. Our families lived right up the road from each other growing up (Depot Road, Poquonneck)). My condolences go out to the entire family. Butch was the consummate gentleman, brother, best friend and the man, to everyone he grew up with. Another angel joining the ranks. Love you Butch.
