Shirley Nicholson Obituary

Shirley M. Nicholson, RN March 18, 1927 - May 30, 2009 PLAINFIELD - Shirley M. Nicholson, RN., of 143 Lake St. Moosup died Saturday at Day-Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She was born March 18, 1927 in Providence, RI. a daughter of the late Louis and Helen (McGarty) Christiansen. Mrs. Nicholson attended parochial elementary schools and graduated from St. Xavier High School, Providence, RI, in 1945. After high school she entered Newport Hospital School of Nursing and after a three year term she received her RN Certificate from Newport Hospital and the State of RI. Her first employment was at Flower 5th Hospital in New York. She also worked at Cedars of Lebanon in California. Coming back east she was employed by Miriam Hospital in Providence. She then married William E. Nicholson on February 19, 1954 at Potter's Ave. Catholic Church in Providence. Mrs. Nicholson worked at the former Norcliff in Brooklyn and later became the Charge Nurse for the Town of Plainfield school system, retiring in 1993. Shirley loved her family very much. She and her husband enjoyed the Greyhound Races as their form of recreation. But at noon on Saturday May 30 the heart of my beautiful Shirley stopped beating. Besides her beloved husband she leaves a son, John E. Nicholson of East Hampton; a daughter and son in law Mary F. and David Kilmer of Rogers, also several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from Dougherty Bros. Funeral Home, 595 Norwich Rd., Plainfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Apostle Church, Plainfield. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105-1942 or the ASPCA.
