WILBUR ARTHUR DEVOE 1923 - 2016
ST. PETERSBURG, FL. - Wilbur Arthur Devoe, 93, husband, father, friend, died Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Westminster Suncoast Health Center in St. Petersburg, FL following a brief illness.
He leaves his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara (Carpenter) Devoe; his son, Wayne Devoe of Old Lyme, CT; his daughter, Heidi Devoe of New York, NY; his son, Scott Devoe of New London, NH; their spouses, 7 grandchildren, and his dear sister, Betty Dailey of Moosup, CT.
He was the son of the late Ida and William Devoe and was pre-deceased by his brother Paul.
Born and raised in Moosup, CT, he served in the Navy during the Second World War. He met Barbara in Warwick, RI where they married in 1951. They lived in Warwick for some years before settling back in his hometown of Moosup. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Devoe spent a lot of time in the woods observing nature and chopping wood. He enjoyed long walks, his dogs, and in the summertime, daily swims at Moosup Pond.
Mr. Devoe worked for many years travelling New England as a successful salesman and eventually left the cold of New England behind so that they could retire in sunny St. Petersburg. With grapefruit trees and hibiscus flowers abounding in their backyard, retirement life was very enjoyable.
The most zealous fan of the New England Patriots, he discovered a passion for softball in his later years. One could find him playing frequently on the fields in Gulfport, FL and he also spent time as a member of the world-famous Kids & Kubs team of St. Petersburg. A good game followed by a coffee and a donut with his teammates made for the best of times. We will all miss his enthusiasm for new ideas and spirited approach to each and every day.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at 11:00am with a mass and Christian burial celebrated at All Hallows Church, 130 Prospect Street, Moosup, CT. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, Route 12 South, Plainfield, CT.
