Carl Mundis Obituary

Carl Frederick Mundis, 79, passed away on Aug. 7, 2023, at Great Plains Health. Mundis was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on Dec. 6, 1943, the eldest child of Frederick F. and Myrtle E. (Stoker) Mundis. The family resided in Parsons, Kansas, where his siblings Barbara, William "Bill" and Patrick were born. Mundis graduated from Parsons High School in 1961 and subsequently earned his B.A. and M.A. in history from Kansas State College at Pittsburg, Kansas, now Pittsburg State University. He was married to Marilyn K. Lett on April 27, 1963, and two children were born to that marriage: Daryl A. in 1963 and Marla K. in 1965. Mundis taught history and coached track at Labette County, Kansas, High School until moving to North Platte in 1969 to take a teaching position at North Platte Junior College, later Mid-Plains Community College. Over the next three decades, he taught U.S. history, western civilization, philosophy and ethics at MPCC. On March 9, 1984, he was married to Colleen Mulligan of North Platte, who survives him. For many years, he played volleyball on the MPCC inter-city league team, but his greatest passion was rock music, and he enjoyed listening to and playing rock with his friends. He enjoyed his dachshunds and cats and feeding the squirrels and birds in his backyard. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and six grandchildren and treasured the time they had together, sharing stories, laughing and enjoying life. He had also been a collector of Corvairs, at one time owning more than a half-dozen of those ill-fated rear-engine automobiles and vans. Although he was quite handy in restoring and patching these cars up, the family struggled to think of many examples of long-distance trips without one breakdown or another. His children were also the proud recipients of twenty-five cent pool lessons, which their dad liberally dispensed at select North Platte locations which also dispensed adult beverages. A devoted follower of both the Kansas City Royals and democracy, he remained hopeful about the fate of both until the end. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara; and his brother, Pat. He is survived by his wife, Colleen; his brother, Bill (Tammy); his son, Daryl (Ruth Froelich) of Baldwin Place, New York; daughter Marla, (Sam Miller) of Oakland, California; his granddaughters, Natasha, Alexandra and Jackie of Boston; and his grandsons, Mark, Leo and Eli of New York. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Partner-Up Rodeo at Equitable Bank. Online condolences may be shared at adamsswanson.com. Private inurnment is at a later date at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Parsons, Kansas. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I was a student of Carl Mundis at Mid-Plains and was also his student aid. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with him and listening to his stories. He always had a great smile when I would run into him at the grocery store. He will be missed. My sympathy to his wife Colleen and family.

Carl was a respected and loved colleague at the college, liberal in life and in politics, with a warm humor so well reflected in his photo.

Whether discussing a point in the faculty lounge or scoring a point on the faculty volleyball team (city champs 13 years in a row!), Carl was always there for us.

Our sympathy to Colleen and all of Carl's family. We will miss him.

Carl Mundis was a good man. There is no higher praise. He was the first adult who was truly both my mentor and friend. I am so lucky to know him. Plus, I got to unload a Corvair van with "Jesus Train" painted on its side on him. He really loved Corvairs. And he really loved you, Colleen!

I attended the Nebraska History class. Our class took a one day bus trip to Western Nebraska. Mr. Mundis made the class fun and interesting. I learned to love studying history about Nebraska.

I took every course he taught from 91-93. No teacher ever had such a profound impact on my life as Mr. Mundis. I am so very lucky to have met you, Carl, thanks for the pound of nuts, and I am so very sorry Colleen.

Mr Mundis was my history teacher at MPCC over 40 years ago. The lessons he taught about history and viewing any information critically stuck with me throughout my own 33 year teaching career. He was one of the reasons I chose education as a career. You can be assured that he touched many, many lives with the lessons he imparted.
