Gordon Peeks Obituary

Gordon J. Peeks, 77, of North Platte, passed away in his home on Easter Monday, April 10, 2023. Raised on the family farm in Chappell, Gordon grew up tending livestock and crops and eventually raising award-winning pigs for the Deuel County Fair. His summer hay baling business put him through college at Kearney State College where he played football, studied to become an industrial arts teacher and earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. In 1968, he married Barbara Kucera and they welcomed daughter Krista in 1970 while serving as dorm parents at Centennial Towers East on campus. He began his full half-century of teaching in Elm Creek before moving to North Platte in 1972 where he briefly taught at Our Redeemer Lutheran School. He then settled in for 41 years at North Platte Senior High, where he taught various industrial arts including electricity, drafting, industrial wiring and math. Serving the NSEA and leading SkillsUSA teams to national competitions brought him great joy before finally retiring in 2014. After his "official" retirement, he continued his work in the classroom as a lab assistant in the electrical technology program at Mid-Plains Community College before segueing into volunteering at multiple elementary schools in North Platte. His long commitment to serving the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and School community included service on multiple church boards, the school building committee, performing trustee and elder duties and ending with co-teaching a grief share class once a week at the church. A teacher to his core, his family would often encounter former students while running errands and hear the familiar, "Hello, Mr. Peeks!" It was estimated that he had taught nearly ten thousand students in his lifetime. The week before he passed, he lamented about missing so much school this year due to his health. His plan was to live to be 100. His generous spirit led him to give away many bottles of homemade wine, hot sauce, bbq sauce, cucumbers and tomatoes. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Florence Peeks. He is survived by his daughter, Krista Peeks Dittman; grandsons, Nelson Dittman and Jessica and Andreas Dittman, all of Lincoln; his siblings, Karren Carnes of Hastings, Lowell Peeks and Jeri of Axtel, Bruce Peeks of Chappell and Byron Peeks and Sherri of York; his niece and nephew, Jason Carnes and Debbie of Seattle and Charla Peeks of Kearney. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the North Platte Public Schools Foundation, which seeks to help students reach their fullest potential by providing resources and opportunities for academic and personal growth. Gordon was instrumental in securing funding for numerous initiatives, scholarships, classroom grants and enrichment programs. Donations will honor his legacy of service and commitment to education. Online donations can be made at NPPSF.org or sent to Adams & Swanson Funeral Home. May he rest in peace, knowing that his contributions to his family, church and community will continue to make a difference in the lives he touched for years to come. Celebration of life is at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1400 East E St, North Platte. Inurnment follows on Saturday in Chappell for family only. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

During a summer break in junior high, I worked for Mr. Peeks sorting various transiters and miscellaneous wires, etc. in his classroom at North Platte High. My father, Gerald Morris, was a good friend of Mr. Peeks during their years together at the school. During that summer, Mr. Peeks took some time out to help me glue wood together and turn a table lamp on the lathe in the woodshop. And it turned out great! I still have that lamp all these years later. A great memory. God Bless and Rest in Peace.

Mr. Peeks was the epitome of what a teacher should be. I knew him when his beard was red. And again through the years as he taught both of my sons in NPHS. I am sure that he will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear of Gordon´s passing, we were neighbors for many years, my wife and I always enjoyed our "in the yard" conversations with Gordon. He loved sharing his tomatoes with several people in the neighborhood. He is a wonderful man and will be remembered as that. R.I.P.

A devoted Christian in his faith and life and extremely dedicated to his educational career. He was our very good and dear friend. He will be missed by us a lot but we will remember him always. He was the one who introduced my husband and I as he had set us up for a blind date in 1966. We will have been married 56 years this May. Wilber and Mary (Dike) Medbery.

I am so sorry for your loss. During the many times I stopped to see Gordy, he always brought me up to date on Krista and his grandsons. He was proud of his grandsons. Always telling me how tall they were getting. I will miss you Gordy. Thank you for all the beautiful flowers. I will miss hearing "Love you kiddo". Blessings to you and your family.

Mr. Peeks got me through Algebra 1 my Freshman year 1991-2. He is the reason for my love of math. After str7ggling through his class I went on to ace Algebra 5 my senior year and college Algebra at NPCC. I will never forget him. My heart goes out to his family. He was an amazing, kind, funny and understanding teacher.

One of the best educators I've ever had the pleasure of sitting in a classroom with, and an even better man. He made me more curious. He showed up to my graduation party and it made my day. My dad also had the pleasure of being in his classroom many years prior, and they talked at length about those days. I actually was remembering Mr. Peeks just a week or two ago while doing some electrical work. What a guy.

Mr Peeks was one of two of my all time favorite teachers! I had him for Algebra in 9th grade and then made sure that I was an aide for him and took one of his other classes just so I could have him as a mentor twice a day! I had no desire to learn electrical or some of the other classes but I took them anyways. He was a great man and will be missed by many! Prayers for all of you!
