Joseph Pohl Obituary

Joseph George Pohl, 68, died Friday July 30, 2010, at the Morrill County Community Hospital.
Joe was born on Nov. 20, 1941, in Gothenburg to Arthur and Margaret (Baumgartner) Pohl. He graduated from Eustis High School in 1959. Following high school Joe worked and farmed in the Hemingford area, he then served in the United States Army during which time he was stationed in Turkey.
On Sept. 10, 1966, Joe married Mary Ann Jansa at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Hemingford. They made their home in Eustis. In 1967 they had their first child, a son, Jeffrey, and later moved to Bridgeport in 1968 where they began farming and ranching. Then in 1969 they had a daughter, Joanne.
Joe received the Outstanding Young Farmer award in 1978 and was a runner-up for the state award. Joe was part owner of Morrill County Equipment for several years. He was a member of the Bridgeport Jaycees for many years in which he received the Armbruster Award. Joe served several years on the FHA board, 12 years on the Bridgeport School Board, many years on the Morrill County Fair Board and the Northport Irrigation Board. Joe was a member of the All Souls Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council. He was a past member of the Elks Club and a current member of the Bridgeport Eagles Club and the American Legion.
Joe truly enjoyed farming and he was a good friend and neighbor. Joe was well known for being able to fix anything, probably with a pair of pliers. Joe never knew a stranger and was always available to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends and taking memorable fishing trips. Joe's family was dear to him and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a man of great strength and determination, which was evident in his courageous battle with ALS.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Jeff (Michelle) Pohl, of Bridgeport; daughter, Joanne (David) Haynes, of Okinawa, Japan; grandchildren, Skyler Haynes, Jocelyn Pohl, Savanah Haynes and Delaney Pohl; siblings, James (Lola) Pohl, of Fort Duchesne, Utah, Paul Pohl, of Bridgeport, Ronna (Larry) Jones, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Dan (Ann) Pohl, of Eustis, David (April) Pohl, of Bloomfield, N.M., Jerome (Pam) Pohl, of Bridgeport, Dolly (Tom) Gerwer, of Brandon, S.D., Zae Pohl (Vern White), of Bridgeport, Mike (Ronda) Pohl, of Chadron; mother-in-law, Mary Jansa, of Bridgeport; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret; and father-in-law, Jerry Jansa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Winds Community Center with Father Dave Rykwalder as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-6:30 p.m., today, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at the All Souls Catholic Church.

Joe was a kind and gentle man, who loved the land almost as much as his family. He was a proud man and I'm sure he is up in heaven farming the rich soil with a smile upon his face.

To Joe's Family,
I have known Joe my whole life he was my neighbor. He was a great man I remember going up there to help with a branding and recently I just got into deer hunting and he would let my husband and I go on his land to hunt.
