William Horst Obituary

ARNOLD - William "Bill" Horst, 71, a resident of Arnold for the last five years, passed away March 2, 2008, in his home surrounded by loving family after a long battle with cancer. He loved the Lord and used his illness as a way to tell others.

Bill was born Aug. 11, 1936, in Scottsbluff, one of five children and the third son of Peter and Lydia Reh Horst. Both sets of his grandparents were German immigrants who fled the Volga River area in Russia.

In 1954, he graduated from Scottsbluff High School and attended the junior college there. He furthered his education at Chadron State College, receiving his master's degree in guidance and administration.

Bill's first teaching position was on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. He continued to teach and coach football, basketball, track and wrestling for 42 years in schools across west and central Nebraska. Bill was an outstanding athlete and fierce competitor, with football being his first love. He coached football teams from Ansley, Westholt and Mullen to championship years.

After retiring from education at Wauneta, he spent time enjoying his favorite hobby of restoring and collecting fishing rods and reels. Bill amassed a large collection and became quite knowledgeable in the history of the various makes and models.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; four daughters, Debra (Donny) Boyles of Gillette, Wyo., Julia Ann Jones of Casper, Wyo., Risa (David) Langman of Eagle River, Alaska, and Heidi (Randy) Connell of Arnold; stepdaughter, Vangie Marsh of Austin, Texas; stepson, Myron Marsh of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Peter Horst Jr. of Oregon; sisters, Janette (Ray) Cawley of Virginia and Sharlene Powell of Denver; four nieces and six nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; brother, Gerald Horst, and stepson, Mitchell Marsh.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Arnold with the Revs. Irvin Jennings and Ben Eichoff officiating.

Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Horst Family,
I want to send my condolences. Bill was a great individual who helped/touched many people both as a guidance counselor and as a football coach. I enjoyed our conversations throughout my high school career.
