Alvin Vance Obituary


Alvin David "Duke" Vance, 89, of Strasburg, VA passed away Friday, May 16, 2025, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Duke, as he was affectionally known by all, was born Shenandoah County, VA on May 7, 1936, a son of the late Walter Lewis Vance, Sr. and the late Florence Virginia Strosnider Vance. He was of the Lutheran faith and worked for Crestline Boat before retiring from Borden Lumber Company in Strasburg, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Teresa Joan Vance Stevens; six siblings, Walter L. Vance, Jr., Sue Vance Cornwell, Eva Vance Elbon, Roy G. Vance, Betty Vance Middleton, and Donald H. Vance.

Survivors include his beloved wife Thelma Joan McIlwee Vance; one grandson Joshua Stevens; former son-in-law Alan Stevens; one sister Mary Vance Paige and husband Howard along with numerous nieces, nephew and cousins.

A funeral service for Duke will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2025, at Stover Funeral Home with Rev. Sonya Williams-Giersch officiating. Duke will be laid to rest privately at Gravel Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Friday one hour prior to the service.
