Bertha Nickens Obituary

Bertha Eloise Nickens, 91, of Front Royal, Virginia, died on Monday, August 22, 2011 at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center in Winchester.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Charles E. Jackson, Pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Nickens was born February 13, 1920 in Linden, Virginia, daughter of the late Emmitt Edward and Jennie Virginia Clowe Baltimore.

She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, where she served as President of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Mary Magdalene Chapter 208, Eastern Star, Friends Together, Cavalette Club, and was a former member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church.

Mrs. Nickens was married to the late Dorsey Golden Nickens.

Surviving are one son, Carroll Nickens of Front Royal; one daughter, Sylvia Moore of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one sister, Lillian Sloane of Front Royal; eight grandchildren, Traci Nickens, Rhonda Roberts, Karen Evans, Tempril Moore, Nikki DeCausmaker, Daryl Nickens, Ervin Nickens, Jr., and Stephanie Nickens; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dorsey E. Nickens and Ervin B. Nickens.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until time of service at the funeral home.
