Carl Cook Obituary


Carl Jackson Cook, 87, of Strasburg, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Maurertown Brethren Church. Pastor Richard Craver will officiate. Burial will follow in Maurertown Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 at the church.

Mr. Cook was born May 8, 1937, in Fort Valley, son of the late Earl M. Cook and Eunice Bowman Cook. He was a 1956 graduate of Toms Brook High School where he played sports and coached basketball, having scored 42 points in a game. He also attended Shenandoah College. He served in the Air Force and the Air National Guard for six years. He was a co-owner of CC & R Inc. for 40 years and was a farmer. He was a member and baptized at Joppa Christian Church in Fort Valley. He was a member of Strasburg Young Farmers Association and the Maurertown Ruritan Club. He managed tractor pulls at the fair for 20 years and went to Montana to elk hunt for 22 years.

Carl is survived by his wife, Kay Lou McClanahan Cook whom he married on October 28, 1961; two sisters, Hilda Vann of Maurertown and Frances Bowman and husband, Earl of Maurertown and brother, Cecil James Cook and wife Wanda of Strasburg. He was preceded in death by sister, Marie Rhodes and brothers, Ivan Cook and Jerry Allen Cook.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC. 28607, American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA. 22116-7023, or Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg, VA 22824.

Carl was a man of many talents. He was skilled at building, design, and repair. He was considered a people person and loved to make people happy. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
