John Curl Obituary

John Edward Curl (Curle) Jr. passed from this life on April 10, 2023. He was born on November 22, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland to John Edward Curl and Margaret Farrell Curl where his father worked in the shipyards in support of the war effort during WWII. In 1945 they moved to Front Royal, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley where they had extensive family roots. He had many memories of wonderful times along the Shenandoah River and in the Blue Ridge National Park, and great fun with a large contingent of relatives who regularly gathered for fellowship. He graduated from Warren County High School and attended Shenandoah College and Lord Fairfax Community College.

John served honorably in the United States Air Force, completed Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas and enjoyed assignments that took him to Chanute AFB in Illinois, Sewart AFB in Tennessee, and temporary duty in England, the Azores and Labrador. He was a life member of the American Legion and was past Commander of American Legion Post # 53.

He was employed in plant maintenance by Randolph Macon Academy for 20 years and was a Maintenance Supervisor at Virginia Department of Corrections and Grafton School in Clarke County.

John had many friends and was an eager and faithful volunteer for any good cause or in support of anyone who asked for his help. He had a positive, outgoing, and generous nature and was devoted to his parents and extended family. He was a talented craftsman and enjoyed extensive building construction skills.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carol Lee Curle Boerner. John is survived by his partner of 30+ years, Beverly Whitlock and her grandson, Elijah. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Roger Boerner, nieces Lisa Avila (Art), and Amanda Ternan (Doug) in San Antonio, Texas, first cousins Phyllis Williams (Arnold), James Haffer (Sherry), James W. Curl (Joan), Mark Farrell, Diana Farrell, and Mary Ann Ferguson.

A lover of all animals great and small, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Humane Society of Warren County, 1245 Progress Drive, Front Royal VA 22630.

John was a decent man and great classmate to our graduating class at WCHS in 1963. I grew up near his home on Stonewall Drive, and have many fond memories of John. At the end of his life, he was a true warrior, and will be missed.

Always jovial and willing to help. He was forced to change his last name to Curle when he joined Air Force due to too many with the last name Curl. Bored when not keeping busy. He came to my house on a Saturday and installed a mirrored set of folding closet doors - just because... I always enjoyed being around John.
