Josephine Doris "Jody" O'Meara

1918 - 2010

In Toms Brook, VA, on Oct. 12th, Jody O'Meara's soul was escorted by angels to Jesus and her heavenly home. At the age of 92, after battling devastating strokes for 5 years, she passed peacefully in the arms of her son, Joe, and friends at her side.

Born in Hastings, NE on July 6, 1918, she was the 4th of 11 children born to Floyd and Doris DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her parents, 7 brothers and 2 sisters, and husband Pat, who died in 2005. They were married 64 years. Jody is survived by her sister, Christine Sheridan, of Derry, NH, six sons, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Jody and Pat became residents of Shenandoah County in 1974 and lived in Deer Rapids. They survived two floods before moving to Toms Brook in 1996. Jody was an activist for Down syndrome and special needs children, and in the 1960s, helped to secure state legislation to create the N. VA Training Center for the retarded. She did volunteer work for the stroke association, enjoyed supporting the local American Legion and Firefighters activities, and was a proud member of the Shenandoah County Republican Party. Jody was a parishioner at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Woodstock.

A funeral mass is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on November 3rd at St. John Bosco Catholic Church.
