Leona Dirting Obituary
Leona Wakeman Dirting, 97, of Edinburg, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 19, at 2:00 pm at Wakemans Grove Church of the Brethren. Pastor PG Coverstone will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may view and sign the guest book Wednesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
Leona was born May 20, 1924, the youngest daughter of Henry O. and Ada Fry Wakeman on a farm on Swover Creek in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
Ms. Dirting was born a farmer, an occupation and lifestyle she lived and practiced her entire life. On June 25, 1949, she married Paul William Dirting, and they began farming together raising cattle, crops, and two children, four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. After Paul's passing in November of 2000, Leona continued to lead and support the family and farm with continued examples of her faith and hard work.
Mom knew her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ having accepted Him at an early age. She joined Wakemans Grove Church where she was an active member involved in numerous activities. She was especially fond of working with the Wednesday Peacemakers, a sewing group, still sewing on the morning she passed away.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son-in-law, Lloyd W. Miller, as well as three sisters, Rebecca Cook, Viola Shirkey, and Hazel Haycock.
She is survived by her children, Linda D. Miller and Michael Dirting (June); Grandchildren, Amanda Feller (Wade), Brent Miller (Nancy), Nathaniel Dirting (Ashle), and Pamela Dodd (Gabe); Great Grandchildren, Tessa Feller and Paul Feller, Kenzie, Maggie, Luke, and Andie Miller, Leigha, Landon, and Lainey Dirting, and Elias Dodd.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Bauserman, Jeremy Kibler, Brad Orndorff, Nathaniel Dirting, Brent Miller and Wade Feller.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wakemans Grove Church, 668 Wakemans Grove Road, Edinburg, VA 22824 or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite #405, Winchester, VA 22601.
