Philip Samuel Olinger was born July 28, 1935, in Quicksburg, VA, the son of Irvin Samuel Olinger and Bertie Mae Garber Olinger. He died on November 19, 2025, at Spring Arbor of Winchester.
Phil (or Sam) was a graduate of New Market High School, New Market, VA, and served in the United States Army from 1955-1957. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1961 and worked for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company for 32 years, retiring in 1995.
Phil was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1964 and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and on the Church Council. He was instrumental in forming Grace Lutheran's softball team in the City Church League. Phil played softball, football and golf for many years, coached the Winchester Recreation Department's Pony League and helped with many children's activities. He was a man who loved to play and to be of help to his fellow man. Phil served on the Winchester City School Board in the 1970s.
Margaret Anne Branner Olinger died November 20, 2025, also at Spring Arbor of Winchester. She was born on October 7, 1934, in New Market, VA, the daughter of Allen Doyle and Pauline Elizabeth Theis Branner.
During her lifetime, Anne worked for Congressman Burr P. Harrison, the Physics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Winchester City Schools and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a past member of the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines International. She enjoyed quilting with the Pleasant Valley Quilters.
Phil and Anne are survived by three sons, Dirk (Amy), Hastings, NE, Phil (Gail), Stephens City, VA, and Todd, Winchester, VA; two grandchildren, Lauren and Jonathan; and two great-grandchildren.
Phil is also survived by one sister, Margery "Midge" Jordan, Mt. Jackson, VA; one brother, Ronald Olinger, New Market, VA, and many nieces and nephews. Four sisters, Barbara Walters, Nancy Smoot, Shelby Bauserman and Mary Roadcap, and one brother, Charles Olinger, predeceased him.
Anne is survived by cousin Janet Dellinger, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters and their husbands, Lillian Sue and Albert L. Pence and Nancy Grey and John G. Stewart; and cousins Austin Branner and Richard Theis, MD.
Private burial services will be held at a later date. Phil wished memorials be made to Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, PO Box 868, New Market, VA 22844 or Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (Godfrey Miller Home Fellowship Center), 26 W Boscawen St, Winchester, VA 22601.
