George Adams Obituary

George Ray Adams, 70, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss.
He was born Aug. 4, 1943, to Ruth Evelyn and John Quincy Adams at a hospital in Pensacola. He graduated from Crestview High school and soon thereafter, joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1961. He retired as a master sergeant in January 1986 after 25 years of service. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal with six oak clusters, Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Longevity Service Award Ribbon with five oak leaf clusters, and Meritorious Service Medal.
While stationed in England, he met and married his wife of 49 years, Gillian Joyce Sturman. After retiring, George was hired as a night auditor for the Holiday Inn Crestview where he worked his way up to bookkeeper and later became general manager. He was also a member of the Crestview area Chamber of Commerce.
Upon his second retirement, George was able to do what he loved most, go fishing with his brother, daughter and grandkids. Going to deer camp and riding four-wheelers was also one of his many pleasures.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and John Quincy Adams; his brother, John Quincy Adams Jr.; his sisters, Jeanette Roscoe and Betty Hyde.
Survivors include his brother, Douglas (Marsha) Adams of Ocean springs, Miss.; and his sisters, Mary (Roy) Blankenship of Pevely, Mo., Ann Clark, and Judy (Jimmy) Cadenhead, both of Crestview; two daughters, Shannon (Kevin) Snow of Crestview and Samantha (Chris) Wheeler of Raymond, Miss.; four grandchildren, Ryan Whitley, Trevor Carnahan, Sarah Snow and Lacey Wheeler; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the Whitehurst- Powell Funeral Home chapel in Crestview, Fla. Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Whitehust-Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Meade officiating.

George was a very special neighbor to my family for over 20 years. He watched my daughter, Chelsea, grow up and was always there to help me when I needed it. He will be missed.

George was a wonderful person, I amoung alot of friends and family worked with George at the Holiday Inn.There wasn't a day went by that I didn't make him laugh. We will miss you George.
