Hyun-Joon Shin Obituary
Gen. Shin was the founder and first Commandant of the Korean Marine Corps and served his country for 25 years leading the Korean Marine Corps before, during and after the Korean War. After retiring from the military, he dedicated 15 years to the Korean Foreign Service, serving his last post as the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Holy See (the Vatican).
Gen. Shin is survived by two sons, Ong-Mok Shin of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Ong-In Shin; four daughters, Cecilia LaForet of Charlottesville, Va., Soon Mi Shin of Geneva, Switzerland, Soon-Wha Shin of Nice, France, Maria V. Abbott of Chesapeake, Va.; and 14 grandchildren.
Gen. Shin will be flown to South Korea for a state funeral and burial at the National Cemetery in Daejeon, South Korea, together with the ashes of his beloved wife.
A funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Niceville on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at 10 a.m., with Rev. Daniel J. Butler officiating. A time of visitation from 9:15 until 9:45 a.m., at the church.
