Jonathan Maney Obituary

Jonathan Winslow Maney, age 66, of Shalimar, Florida, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020 at the home of his daughter, Jessica Pearl Maney, in Kansas City, Kansas after a three-year battle with cancer. He died peacefully, in his sleep. Jonathan was born to the late Charles Thomas Maney and Mary Bewlay Steele Maney on January 2, 1954 in Lexington, Kentucky, the fourth of seven children.
Jonathan had an irrepressible joy and optimism in life, along with an infectious sense of humor. As a toddler he was known as ""The Atom Bomb"" because of his love for drawing on walls, an early indication of his effervescent spirit and creativity. For most of his youth, his parents affectionately called him ""Johnny Cake"". He was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Bandung, Indonesia, Kettering, Ohio, and Fort Walton Beach, Florida graduating from Choctawhatchee High School, Class of 1972. He spoke both Bahasa, Indonesian as well as Sundanese. While in Kettering, he became a student pilot and earned his Eagle Scout Award. He attended Auburn University on a full Army ROTC Scholarship and completed Airborne School. He was proud of his descent from multiple Revolutionary War ancestors including one who founded Lexington, Kentucky, Dayton, Ohio and was an early settler in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jonathan was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and shooting in Walton County with his best friend Dennis Barbarisi, Esq. Jonathan was a member of Shalimar United Methodist Church.
Jonathan was a builder and craftsman of particular ingenuity and skill. He began his professional life as a building and remodeling contractor in Fort Walton Beach, leaving his mark on restaurants, office complexes, and retail centers all along the Emerald Coast. After meeting and marrying his beloved wife, Deborah, they founded a local screen-printing and design company together. What began as a collaborative outgrowth of Deborah's airbrush studio, would slowly become ""The Passionate Patriot,"" a retail clothing line and signature calling card for one of this community's most outspoken conservative voices. He enthusiastically viewed his work as both a calling and a civic duty. Jonathan loved his customers like family, many of whom loved him. He would urge people to vote – and vote conservative! - but more importantly he would urge them to think.
What truly set Jonathan apart was his generosity, his friendliness, and his enduring passion for both family and Country. His abiding love for his wife, Debbie, was tender yet unshakable. In sickness and in health, he was her anchor and her rock. He passionately loved his two children, Andrew and Jessica, of whom he was very proud. Jonathan is survived by his wife of 30-years, Deborah Pauline Harry Maney, son Chief Warrant Officer 3 Andrew Chadwick Maney (Ansley), daughter Jessica Pearl Maney, PA (Fiancé, David Zukley) and two grandchildren, Marcus and Juliette Maney. He was also survived by six siblings whom he loved dearly: Captain (retired) Edward Arthur Maney (Cindy), Judge (retired) Thomas Patterson Maney (Caroline), Charles Michael Maney (Jane), Colonel (retired) Matthew Steele Maney (Mary), Louise Bewlay Given (Mark), Christy Dowden Koury (Ken) and numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Lord.
The family would like to thank Dr. Harvey & Henry Hsiang and their incredible team at Emerald Coast Cancer Center for their kind and compassionate care. The family would also like to thank Mabel Mallens for her friendship, dedication and indomitable spirit.
A funeral and time of remembrance will be held on Saturday, the 27th of June at the Emerald Coast Funeral Home chapel. Following services, the family will pay their final respects at Beal Memorial Cemetery. As an alternative to flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, the Center for Civic Education, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the United Services Organizations (USO).
