Steven Doheny Obituary

Dr. Steven Peter Doheny passed away unexpectedly May 5, 2008. A memorial service will be held at Emerald Coast Funeral Home on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m.
He was born on April 26, 1949, in Minneapolis, the second in a family of eight brothers and one sister. A hard worker from the beginning, at 17 he was already manager of Henry's Drive-In in Bloomington, Minn., when he hired 16-year-old waitress Maureen Norrgard. Four years later, on Nov. 27, 1970, the two were married.
Together, they worked their way through college at the University of Minnesota, and Steve went on to earn his medical degree with a specialty in psychiatry. After graduation from medical school, he served as the director of the State Security Hospital in St. Peter, Minn., for nine years.
In 1988, Steve and his family moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where he opened a private practice in adult and forensic psychiatry. During his career, he also worked at the Mental Health Unit at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, where he was currently serving as the medical director. In 2002, he became a professor of psychiatry at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine and later Chairman of the Board of Directors. He also recently became a clinical faculty member of Florida State University Medical School.
Dr. Doheny was devoted to his work, and always gave generously of his professional time, striving to place the well-being of those in his care above all else.
Steve was a member of various medical societies and active in the Krewe of Bowlegs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary Melchior Doheny; and brother, Terry. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; daughters, Shannon and fiancé Richard, Brenna and Megan; his father, Robert; his brothers, Dan and wife Marion, Jeff and wife Laura, Dennis, Bobby, Larry, and Joe and wife Lori; sister, Kate and husband Joe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve led a full life, but he left us before his time. He was a beloved physician, colleague, husband, father, brother, and friend, who always placed the needs of others before his own. He will be sorely missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mental Health Association of Fort Walton Beach, or a charity of your choice.

I met Dr. Doheny about 15 years ago after seeing Dr. after Dr. and no one could figure out how to help me. Then a miracle happened and Dr. Doheny came into my life and he knew exactly how to help me. He was amazing!!! Everyone who knows me knows about Dr. Doheny and how he basically saved me from a severe chemical imbalance I was suffering from. I sure hope he knew how much I appreciated him! I know I will never find anyone else like him. There will always be a huge void in my life with out Dr. Doheny. My prayers and thoughts are with you Maureen and the rest of your family. I will always be thinking of you. You were very blessed to have such a wonderful man in your lives. And I want you to know he will NEVER be forgotten in mine. Love and prayers, Catherine Miller

My sympathies to Dr. Doheny's family. Although I recently moved, Dr. Doheny was on my mine daily as I cope with a move and losing his guidance and kind help. When I received the notice of his passing I was so sadden and shocked. A very great Doctor has been lost to those who needed his help. To his family may you know I would not have made it, if not for him.

Dear Maureen & Family, I just heard about Steve - - - I can't begin to tell you how shocked I am. I worked for Steve when he was Medical Director at St. Peter. He cared so much about the patients and the staff, he was always thinking of others. It was an incredibly sad day when he left the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know you must miss him terribly. I am very saddened to know that he is no longer out there making the world a better place, but he made a great impact on so many lives while he was here. I will miss him very much.

It was a great pleasure to meet Dr. Doheny during the boat trip on Saturday in Grand Cayman, two days before this unfortunate event. I was truly astonished by his simplicity and down to earth personality. We spent at least an hour and a half talking baout many issues including personal life issues and his cuban cigar.
Dr. Doheny's loss will be a huge loss for St. Matthew's and also to the Medical community as a whole. I will never forget his words of wisdom and have already implemented those in my day to day life. I will always cherish those few hours we got to meet and ever remember that in my life. I pray for his soul to rest in peace.

Dr. Doheny will be sadly missed by all associated with St. Matthew's University. He was a quiet leader who always had the best interests of our students (and their patients) in mind.

Steve's last visited Cayman to preside over the Graduation Ceremony with a standing room only crowd in the largest conference hall on the island where he welcomed over 100 new physicians into the profession. The incredible growth in the size and, more importantly, the quality of this school is largely due to his stewardship.

I will remember him best for our last conversation while sailing on a replica of the Santa Maria in the blue Caribbean Sea, discussing our mutual passion, medical education.

Please accept our condolences from all the SMU students, staff and faculty who knew Steve and all those who didn't as he diligently worked worked behind the scenes, making all our lives brighter.

Dear Doheny Family,
I just received news today of Dr. Doheny's passing. I was a patient of his for the past eighteen years. He encouraged me always to pursue my career as a professional artist, and, with his help, I was able to acheive that goal and so many others. I can't imagine where I would have landed if I had not met him along the way. He was a rare person. My prayers are with you. He will be greatly missed.

Maureen ~ I am so very sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Reading these touching memorials that people are writing shows what a great guy he was. I only knew him one week a summer, when he was vacationing on Spring Lake. Steve always took the time to saunter over and see how things were going...cigar in hand. He will be missed.
God's hugs to you and your family.

Maureen,
We love Steve and you so much, and we are broken hearted-- for you, the girls, and for us. We are here for you--anytime, day or night. I recently heard Rev. Jim Ross say that when you exit a room, you enter another room, and so it is with life and death. When you exit your earthly life, you are entering the next phase of your life in heaven. Even though we miss Steve here on earth, we look forward to seeing him again in heaven. We can just see him headlining at the biggest Open Mic Night in the Sky! Love, Em and Steve

Maureen,
I am so very sorry for your loss.
Dr.Doheny wasn't just my doctor he was a friend and I will miss him terrible. He was the light when there was no light in my life. He was the calm in my storm. He saved my life. If it hadn't been for him I wouldn't be here today. At the end of each session I would always thank him for listening . Now I thank him for being such a good and decent man not because he was being paid to listen to me but because HE WAS A GOOD AND DECENT MAN. I will never forget him.
